I found it interesting to see someone carrying a "1980s schoolbag" style bag today. I remember having a "1980s schoolbag" in primary school! Interesting to see that's the style.

That the ones you wore accross your back with two shoulder straps? I had that kind in primary school. Then a document style carry one when at High School. I didn't think the difference was to do with the era, more to do with the capacity required because in primary school you sat at the same desk throughout each year, so were able to keep most of your schoolbooks in your desk. While in Secondary Scool you moved from class to class, so had to keep your books in your bag/satchel/briefcase.

I had a leather satchel at the start of primary school (1977 ), a Rucanor (sp?) at the start of secondary school, cos EVERYONE had one, but by 6th year I had found myself and had a bright pink over the shoulder number that I drew all over.
I had a leather satchel in 1969, which was compulsory for all first years unless you had a rich mummy and daddy and then you could have a briefcase, swiftly followed by a multicoloured knitted thing that was all the rage in 2nd year, along with maxi dresses and loons, then a patchwork doofer made from leather then I gave up taking anything but my handbag and a couple of pens as I never took stuff home. We then got lockers, the school was very forward thinking, or at least they thought they were, mine was stuffed with loads of useless things and by the time I was in 6th form it was a carrier with coffee, tea, milk and biscuits that I took to school.

there were 8 of us kids all in close ages and mum could not afford a leather satchel for any of us, she was too busy keeping us in shoes which I must say were always good leather. I remember in Secondary School, before I went to Grammar, all the girls used to have carrier bags with pictures on them or a designer (bit like now I suppose with the NIKE etc plastic type duffle bags they put your goods in). BUT! When I went to Grammar, which you had to pass 11 plus for, I had the lot! All the family must have pitched in because 2 of my Brothers had the same treatment, a reward I suppose for doing well or, mum wanted us to look as good as the posh ones, which we never did lol!

Oooo, I live fairly near to Beamish. About 20 mins drive on the motorway. Brill day out, never mind the 80's, my daughter couldn't believe it when I said in 1962 I used individual blackboards and chalk to do my first writings in school. they wouldn't let us have pencils and paper until we could prove ourselves proficient at writing. And Sr Bridget would spiflicate any child who smudged their copy book. God but there was a word to instill fear into the heart of any 5 yr old, spiflicate, didn't ever know what it meant and wasn't going to tempt her do carry out the threat

Yeah, beamish is cool, I spent nearly all day riding on the trams I loved it, edinburgh is soon to get trams
There is talk between 4 of our surrounding councils that the east coast line will be getting trams if they get approval. Edinburgh is great, my son did the Tattoo up there a couple of years back, when he was in the army. Lots to see and do and lots of history. Didn't see any 80's schoolbags there. The 80's was when my children were born and they "re-invented" everything, SunnySan sandals became jellies, Prince became any number of other things, Michael Jackson remodelled himself as did Madonna. The 80's were the new 60's/70's.

yeah Beamish Museum is an excellent place for a day out and the school is one of my faves. The desks being very similar to what I had in infant and junior school. I had a satchell type bag when I was at my infant/junior schools and then by the time I progressed to secondary school I had a haversack which I wrote the names of my fave groups/singers. The entire school took their stuff to school in a webbing haversack. Now will somebody please tell me what an 80s schoolbag is please. My kids went to school in the 80s and they had backpacks similar to the ones kids have today, cept probs with a diff design on.
