I do Red Face even though people lump Mud in with them, they wern't really glam rock, the guy with the long earings tried his best, but Les Grey just looked like someones old dad!

point taken about mud although plenty of people put them under the glam band wagon.

as for t.rex. some great song titles. ride a white swan, hot love, get it on, jeepster, metal guru, solid gold easy action, children of the revolution, classic stuff. Cool

I only really know the mainstream stuff, but what I heard I enjoyed. If only there was someone around here who knew stuff about Glam music. That might help a bit!

I'm curious how Slade are viewed within the 'Glam' community. Joke or Legend?

IMHO the ultimate glam group were Sweet, they had the balance of image and sound.
Glitter band were style over content, Slade and T.rex were content over style.

well there quite a bit of differance between image and sound Big Grin sweet were agreat band and very heavy rock sounding as well. (that might surprise afew) they usually pinned one of there songs unto the b sides of there singles which chinn and chapman wrote. papa joe and a load of other ole pony !! but its t.rex and slade who were miles ahead of the rest. lets be honest the rest never came close. still good but nowhere the top two.
funny how no one has mentioned gary glitter !! Big Grin

I'd go with The Sweet for some of their singles, the albums were rubbish tho'. And of course there's David Bowie from Ziggy to Diamond Dogs, and not forgetting the New York Dolls, who may just have influenced the lot of them.

bowies ziggy stardust years were fanastic. he was at the top of his game then. more suited to the album charts rather than singles. think starman was the biggest single sucess from the other wise great album.
as for the new york dolls m8. they didnt appear till years later.

New York Dolls formed in 1972 actually but I doubt they had much influence in what was happening in the U.K.-Bowie was probably aware of them but that's about it.

ziggy stardust album came out either late 71 or 72. 72 i think. so while the new york dolls may have formed in 72 it ment sod all. they didnt come into there own untill about 75.

Err.. correction.
The New York Dolls were VERY aware of the UK scene!

You seem to forget that some members of what were to be the Dolls actually attended an underground gig of Tyrannosaurus Rex (Bolan's earlier hippy acoustic combo, formed with Steve Peregrine Took) in London in the late 60s.

The Dolls still affirm their indebtedness to Bolan and T.Rex, with some members having attended a tribute in early June with Tony Visconti and Ace Frehley in Nu Yawk..... Steve Conte (current guitarist, taking the original Thunders slot) actually played a couple of T.Rex songs with his other band during the evening too.

The New York Dolls' first album came out in 1973 but they had been gigging before then and came over to the UK in late '72 for some shows. DB mentions Billy Murcia, the late NYD drummer, who died in '72, in the song Time from Aladdin Sane, where he refers to his death as " Time, demanding Billy Dolls, and other friends of mine." The Dolls were on the scene at the time Glam Rock broke in the UK, and I always thought The Sweet were a lightweight version of them.

now lets get this glam rock thing right Big Grin like someone says alice cooper couldnt be counted as glam rock !! (come on man ) of course they was as was alvin stardust, suzi quatro, bowie , mott the hopple etc etc
as for the dolls. they didnt do sod all in the uk at any time lads. (ok they played here but there infulance on glam was none) some say mcclarn based the sex pistole on them but i doubt that as the ramones must be the first and biggest influance on punk there was.
