Smile They're mainly bands that mean/have meant something to me, but quite possibly haven't meant much to critics, chartshows or (in the case of older stuff) halls of fame and the fans of their imitators.

I looked on Last.FM at the listener stats for most of those bands, and they are pitiful compared to some of their peers and most of their imitators.

Calla are a relatively new band, although they have just released their FOURTH album.

According to their MySpace (/callamusic), their influences are: << the velvet underground, the smiths, nick cave & the badseeds, leonard cohen, joy division, echo & the bunnymen, the jesus and mary chain>>

I just couldn't ignore them with that list! (It probably represents around 30% of everything I listen to in an average week, excluding bands influenced by them.)

You can download Calla's "It Dawned on Me" (from the new album "Collisions") on MySpace. It's got a very strong Bunnymen/Chameleons vibe to it.

Ha, I was going to include Mazzy Star as well LOL (probably my favourite late-night listening - up there with the Twin Peaks soundtrack.)

I could never forget the Bunnymen Wink Thankfully, they are getting some recognition now - a lot of recent reviews of (among others) Interpol and Editors are starting to mention the Bunnymen before Joy Division as an influence, and they got great press at SXSW (the VIP show excepted, oops!)

I only just noticed that you also included The Veils - random band I discovered through a CD compilation just over a year ago. Out of sheer curiosity, and with ten minutes to kill, I downloaded their album from a site I subscribe to and was amazed. Fab!!

If you like that Bunnymen/Velvets/JAMC vibe, you should check out Calla. I've come to realise I'm not keen on strong American accents as far as vocals go - the guy from Calla and Paul Banks of Interpol are probably my limit! (Apart from Jimbo, Cohen and Lou, etc.)

Someone said "oh, 'Initiate' sounds like Chris Martin." Eek I reminded them that the melody may sound like Clay Plod, but they ripped off the Bunnymen anyway!

If you didn't already hear the new Secret Machines album, then you're in for a treat. They are probably better known/loved in the UK than in the US.
One of the most amazing bands live. Mind-blowing in fact. They make so much noise for three young guys!

As long as it's not The fnkin' Rakes.

I think the idea here was more groundbreaking bands and/or artists with impressive back catalogues that are often overlooked/worthy of more recognition (you know, like Love, T.Rex, The Fall, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, etc.)

Also, Be Your Own Pet are another example of NME and Zane Lowe-influenced Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome. I detest the tuneless, tone-deaf little t*ts.

Thing is though, I didn't hear them through reading NME. Same for a lot of people with a lot of other bands.

Sorry, I interpreted the thread wrong.
