The new series starts this Friday night, so I thought I'd start a thread.....

= = =
Hello Music Lovers,

So here I am back for another series with an embarrassment of riches of artists and musicians for your musical delectation!

Joining me on the first show of the new series is one of the most important composers and song writers of the 20th Century. His career has spanned six decades! BURT BACHARACH has been responsible for dozens of standards and songs that would certainly make up a definitive song book of the 20th Century. Burt will be performing tracks from his new studio album, ‘At This Time’ and will be joined by Rufus Wainwright on one of the tracks from this album; “Go Ask Shakespeare. I’ll also be chatting to Burt and showing some fantastic BBC archive footage of Aretha Franklin performing a classic Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition.

Alison Goldfrapp is fast becoming the face of 2005, and with musical partner Will Gregory they make up GOLDFRAPP. This is the third time that Goldfrapp will have been on Later and I must say that I am confident that Alison and the band will inject some intense glamour into proceedings!

Who else do I have on the show!?

EDITORS from Birmingham borrow from the tradition of Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen and even U2 to create their own wall of moody sound. They will be performing “Bullets” and “Munich” from their critically well received debut album ‘The Back Room’.

BRENDAN BENSON hails from Michigan but is now based in the sunshine state of California. Brendan and his band play songs with an uplifting sentiment that put a smile on your face and give you a warm feeling inside. Brendan will be playing tracks from his current album ‘The Alternative To Love’.

Twenty six year old CORINNE BAILEY RAE comes from Leeds but sounds as though she should come from the Mississippi Delta, her voice has been described as a cross between Billie Holiday and Eryka Badu. Corinne will be performing her forthcoming single “Like A Star”.

I’ll also be performing with a hot new young talent, JAMIE LIDELL. Jamie has been described as having a nu soul voice. He’s currently residing in Berlin hanging out with the musical cognoscenti of that fine city and his voice has to be seen to be believed.

So that’s all for now, coming up next week I have ARCTIC MONKEYS, MYLO, JOSEPH ARTHUR and MS. DYNAMITE.

Saturday morning? Glastonbury? That's just an evil rumour surely? I always thought Friday gradually slipped away into nothing and then Saturday emerged fully formed in the early afternoon.

Saying "sends you on ya way" made me think that Karma meant Jools was ideal for sending you off to sleep Big Grin

I haven't watched Jools yet (taped it), so can't really comment on their Friday night performance.

Editors are a very good band live, although I've only seen them in small venues (a small tent, a 200-capacity bar/club and on a roof Big Grin)

They are currently the darlings of the WWW Bunnymen contingent (as well as Elbow, who bore me a bit LOL)...... only one person I know doesn't like Editors!

I'd say the album is fairly varied, though, meaning I can distinguish between one song and another at least. Nothing particularly uptempo on there, mind (which you'd get to some extent with, e.g. Joy Division, New Order, Chameleons, Bunnymen, Furs... ).
To be honest, I think of a few of their songs as "the Bunnymen one", "the Furs one", "the Interpol one" Razz

Ha, I saw that Goldfrapp video a few weeks ago on something, so make a point of changing channels now. "Weirdo" is not the word!

The 'Later' webpage says:

Mylo, Ms Dynamite, Arctic Monkeys, Los De Abajo(Latin ska/punk band from Mexico), Joseph Arthur(singer/songwriter), and Lizz Wright(jazz, gospel & rhythm & blues influenced).

They sometimes make last minute guest changes though.

Incidentally, I thought Corinne Bailey Rae (?) was absolutely fantastic on last week's. I can't wait to hear more stuff from her.

First one of this series i have remembered to watch Roll Eyes
Was mainly watching for Maximo Park, unfortunatly i thought when they sung Apply Some Pressure they sounded quite bad. At least they also did The Coast is Always Changing; it sounded better and is also one of my favourites Smile

The Coast Is Always Changing was definitely the best Maximo Park performance, I agree. I wish the singer wouldn't act so agitated, it detracts from everything else.

KT Tunstall was good......and that's about it really.
Robbie Williams' efforts were a pile of cack - embarrassingly inadequate amongst all the authentic musicians....and what's with the stealing of lyrics from other bands?? First it was The Killers at Live 8( Mad Mad) and now he pilfers from Arctic Monkeys at the end of his crap 'Tripping' song! He must be stopped Mad Mad

I thought Arctic Monkeys were ACE last week btw, just to end on a positive note Big Grin
