This week(extract from the latest Later email):

There can be no doubt that the mod father of cool PAUL WELLER has got
his ‘mojo’ back with his new album ‘As Is Now’. Weller will be
performing tracks from this critically acclaimed album.

From Mexico, Carlos SANTANA has sold over 90 million albums worldwide
in a career that has so far spanned four decades. His signature guitar
sound – fusing rock, jazz, blues, soul and latin styles is as unique as
it is instantly identifiable.

Former Velvet Underground member and one of the coolest Welsh men in
music, JOHN CALE returns with a new album, ‘blackAcetate’ which has been
described as containing songs of “fervour, distortion and atmosphere”.

Who else do I have for your televisual delight?

BETTYE LAVETTE is one of the supreme voices in soul music and a hero to
the UK’s 1970’s Northern Soul kids. Having recorded for four decades,
Bettye has remained criminally unknown. With a new record deal under her
hat, Bettye returns with a new album, ‘I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise’
and a mission to finally make her mark.

Icelandic natives SIGUR ROS deliver another dose of their uniquely
atmospheric, orchestral and layered sound from their new album ‘Takk’.

Finally, nine time Grammy winner, SHERYL CROW has released her first
studio album in three years, ‘Wildflower’. It has been described as “a
collection of intimate, introspective compositions”.

Next week, I’ll have TEXAS, BABYSHAMBLES, SALIF KEITA, TEDDY THOMPSON &
SEAN PAUL.

I'm looking forward to Cale and Sigur Ros, Santana *might* be ok but the rest sounds a bit boring. We'll see!

Babyshambles the week after then...will they turn up? Ninja

Cale should be great. Santana will be interesting.

Shambles...... watching through the fingers (again), me thinks!
Great live in a sweaty little venue, but just not made for TV LOL

I'd practically given up on them, but the last time I saw them the same night as I saw ex Damned and Pistols members (et al) performing live restored my faith completely.
Yep, Babyshambles have energy, youth and edge over the old punk rockers of yesteryear. Sad to say.
The album is a 6-7/10, but better than might ever have been expected. (The demos and bedroom sessions are far superior, though!).
Sack Mick Jones, I say.
The quality broadsheets seem to love "Down In Albion", funnily enough.

I've two Sigur Ros albums and don't think I'll ever need to buy another .. that sound does pall a little.
The rest of the show was pretty boring and predictable, as has been said..and John Cale was the highlight I guess. Santana hasn't done anything interesting for about 30 years has he ? I liked his playing when it was less Edmundo Ross and soulful pap and more jazzy and John Mclaughlin. Could not stand the woman Bettye Lavette either.

Really? They're still featured as being on next week's show on the website.

I didn't see last night's show, looks like I didn't miss much.

Yeah, John Cale was great. I'm tempted to get his new album now....
Santana is Santana and not really anything new/experimental.

Not really my thang, but I liked Sigur Ros and they'd would probably be great in the right venue and with the right setting. (I sat watching them trying to imagine imagine Massive Attack up there.)

The Kirk Brandon forum got hacked about six months ago and they have some half-hearted guy in charge. Messages from 2002, I know! They still send out emails before gigs, I think.

(They need to get Bunnymen management on the case - hacked and back to normal in a week. And that was just a week before a 60-date world tour LOL)

Rumoured? Confused

Isn't Pete in Bath at the moment?
Or maybe in Capford or Digben.... wherever they may be?!

He made a bit of a comeback a few years ago (around 2000?) with an album that contained "Smooth". That was a big hit... well, it was on the aerobics studio floor at least Big Grin

I kind of like the crossover thing he's been doing all these decades, but I'd find it difficult to sit and watch him for 90 minutes.....

Enjoyed the usual mixed bag this week.

Favourite would have been Paul Weller, but I was disapointed unfortunately, "Savages" was ok, but lacked something for me.

Betty Lavette was great though, Id never heard her before. Such a gritty voice and strong, (at times I thought of Joplin Confused lol) I loved 'Joy', great lyrics. She was may fave this week. Cool

Right then, I was bored stiff throughout Weller and he got the FWD treatment as befitted his performance. I liked the first Santana track (and obviously the Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen outro) but the second one he did sounded horribley disjointed, like he was jamming over a Matchbox 20 record! Sheryl Crowe was another to get the FWD treatment.

The highlights for me then, were Betty Lavette, what a voice! She had a great rhythm section as well. Sigur Ros were wonderful.

You cynical ol' bu99er you!

They did turn up - I just saw some backstage footage of Pete and his many harpies at the Jools show, in a dressing room jamming to "Breathe"/"Genie in a Bottle" Eek (sounds very bizarre, I know, but it works.)
Who'd have thunk it?! LOL

Patrick is indeed a talent to behold on that mandolin (or is it a banjo Confused!)

They've filmed it already, Pro - this week's email:

Scottish rockers Texas return to the scene after a break with a new
album 'Red Book'. Sharleen Spiteri fronts these groovy melodic
Glaswegians. I’ll be talking to Sharleen and catching up with all her news since I
saw her last.

Sean Paul is the worldwide ambassador of dancehall reggae. With his
last landmark album ‘Dutty Rock’ Sean sold 6 million copies and won an
armful of Grammys to boot. With his new record ‘The Trinity’ Sean has high
hopes of achieving the same level of success. I’m really glad he’s back
in the Later studio.

Salif Keita is sometimes called the “golden voice of Africa”. Born in
Mali his music blends the traditional griot music of his childhood with
other West African influences along with sounds from Cuba, Spain and
Portugal to create a sound which has an overall Islamic feel to it. He’s
bringing a rather tall chap to dance with him as well – keep an eye out
for him. He’s spectacular!

Pete Doherty was still a Libertine the last time he was on Later. But
we welcome him back with his new band Babyshambles, who have just
released their debut album ‘Down In Albion’, which was, incidentally,
produced by The Clash’s Mick Jones.

We like a bit of pedigree on Later and this week I’m glad to welcome
the offspring of folk royalty. Like the Wainwright siblings, Martha a
