I don't think you can really equate the upcoming Simpsons movie with the Flintstones and Scoobie Doo Movies. Firstly, the aforementioned train wrecks were live action with different writers and stars than their legendary counterparts, whereas the Simpsons movie, despite rumours of a live-action attempt, is to be entirely within the style of the series. Besides, with 17 series under their belt, and script quality reducing dramatically since season 8, the Simpsons need something to remind the punters just how good they really can be. My concern is that the film will fall into the pitfalls of the more recent seasons and defer to predictable, tired 'quirky' humour rather than its original sharp-edged wit. I'm willing to give the movie a decent hearing - 6 or 7 years ago I might of agreed that the movie would ruin the franchise, but the Simpsons is in danger of fading away and, if they can pull it off and produce one final burst of brilliance, one masterstroke of utter genius before they crumble completely, then they will be arguably the greatest TV phenomenon of all time.
More information is avaliable on The Simpsons Movie Wikipedia page. Including two animatics.
I would post a link, but it will just get removed.
But the film seems to be coming on. And sounds very good.
But it will not be the end. Season 19 has alreday been commissioned and Matt Greoning has said it will go on until Season 20. So it will last for a while after the film is released.

You can see the teaser and the trailer here, the trailer is really funny (but it looks like the Movie's going to be very "new Simpsons" which is a shame!!)
