What a laugh,
best giggle in a long time

''The counter may or may not be a precise reflection of the rate of depletion''

Or might just be a total fabrication,
based on the single minded ambition
of a very anti detecting individual
who seeks to damage the hobby,
who is loosing the plot........

Indeed, that's possible. But I'm more than content to let the general public decide for themselves.

What is crucially important is that those thousands who make their passion in life removing the country's archaeological record bit by bit for their own private benefit or profit shouldn't be the ones they listen to.
Soon, you and your 'istry loving mates will have hoiked out ten million hartefax, and all for the entire benefit of the rest of us, eh?

Conservation as recommended by self-interested eroders exists in no other field and no other country - for extremely good reasons.

And their only defence isn’t to point to the fact they report to PAS as they mostly don’t, but to post endless "good news" stories seeking to pretend they do and to say that those that point to what they really do seek to "damage the hobby”. Too damn right they do. Brilliantly worked out.

This has turned out not to be a grave, but a wall footing.
Lots of good finds recorded over the weekend though.

Roman coin find

TWO Roman coins unearthed at South Park in Reigate by a metal detecting club are to be studied and dated by experts.

The Reigate-based East Surrey Search and Recovery Group made the discovery last Sunday in a field.

Now, David Williams, Surrey County Council's finds liaison officer, is to examine the finds and record details of their locations.

The first coin was detected by Steve Harvey, of Salfords, and is thought to be a 2nd century sestertius. Daniel Whiteman discovered the second, much smaller coin, minutes later and just yards away. It is believed to be a 4th century nummus.

"momentous"

How telling that it should be a detectorist that describes it thus. PAS didn't.

Three recorded objects per detectorist per year!

What would you have the public believe - that that represents a significant percentage of the objects they have pulled out of the ground and that the hobby is full of right-thinking heritage heroes who do right by society in response to a multi-million pound investment of public funds?

Probably.
