Have you any pictures of roman intaglios on yer data base and if so have you any that would have been used to decorate helmets?
|
| |
|

|
Thats what I asked you for!
Have you got a picture of an intaglio that would have been used to decorate a helmet as opposed to a finger ring?
Are they the same size?

Before you answer let me go and check the book I read it in...

No need for me to type out all of the information I hope?
Dimensions: 10.5mm by 8.5mm by 1mm. oval intaglio, translucent brown in colour, very slightly convex. The device is one of the Dioscuri - either Castor or Pollux <snip>
It goes on..
Furthermore, the type of the Dioscurus with his horse is used to decorate armour, for example cheek pieces from helmets found near South Collingham Notts & South Shields.
If you want to know more I shall type it but I was just after a few images if possible along with a picture of one set in a replicated helmet?
No rush, it isn't important, I was just curious.

At the time of the publication this was one of three in Britain found in a Roman context.

http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/learn/archaeol/index.htmlDr Peter Webster is running a twenty week course on Monday nights researching Roman and Medieval Archaeology, especially Roman and later ceramics. Only admin costs to the tune of £33 are required. Anybody got the blurb to hand? I cant find out any more on the website - or should I say I havent yet.

Online research publicationsCaerwent Samian Catalogue - This makes available interim reports 1-5 (1998 - 2003) from the ongoing catalogue of the samian from early excavations at Caerwent, currently housed in the Newport Museum. It is our intention to add further yearly interims until such time as the catalogue can be re-arranged into a final order and decisions made as to the best form of final publication. http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/learn/archaeol/caerwent/Master_Index.htmlIndex of Central Gaulish pottery figure types - compiled by Robert Hopkins of the Cardiff Samian Group. http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/learn/archaeol/gaulish/Main.html

My mistake Roger, just called my brother again and he read the blurb out once more. I'll get a copy tomorrow.

Roger, I missed your last post on the previous page. I think it may be best to mail Dr Webster to see whether I can do what I want.
Not only that but travelling to Cardiff once on a Monday is just about bearable, to do it twice is a bit much.

Ok, now that date is subliminally etched into the cell (It has now superseded my wife's birthday, my anniversary, my parents birthdays not to mention my childrens) you will have to explain why I have to remember it?

quote: Experts from Gwent and Glamorgan Archaeological Trust believe the find is the remains of a bridge recorded as destroyed by a storm in 1772.
It was quite a while after that before anything was done about it, or should I say anything about building a stone bridge. I was wondering if a watching brief was going on over the works there and then I realised that with it being on the tidal mud banks they would have been extremely bloody stupid not to after the events of a few years ago.

If just a fraction of the visitors who use St Fagans could be 'pursuaded' to visit them we would have no worries.Blummin place is 'chocka' every day....very few flyers on display to advertise the others though
