If it's meant to be a wind up, why did it apear on a detectorist site. Is this really the sort of thing that detectorists get hot under the collar about?

Freedom to write what one likes I suppose.
Typically random answer there kev, nice one
So you don't KNOW it is a wind up, you just assume it is. Not quite the same thing. Could be a perfectly genuine post.
If it was posted with the intention of winding up archaeologists, do you not thing an archaeological forum would have been more likely? Not a lot there for most detectorists of my acquaintance to get hot under the collar about!
Sorry if I was being random there aardvark. What I meant was,bad press isn't exactly what we need at any time, but right now in particular, one bad apple and all that. Anyway hope you are well, nice to see you again, after such a long time. Regards kev.

I found it bizzare & funny but most of all stupid, I am still laughing.

So you think encouraging more people to record their finds with the choice of pas or an alternative is stupid and laughable then D? I would have thought that getting finds recorded, logged, conserved etc was paramount, and the way they are recorded,so long as it's acceptable and to a high standard,as of course pas is,would be the way to go. Offering an alternative way to record might get more people recording for whatever reason they might not do at the moment is a very good thing. So it looks like you don't promote recording then, hmm quite surprising that, even the more anti detecting am,ongst you think the idea is a good one. And all this time I thought you were all for the recording and saving of information that finds/findspots etc reveal of our past, and will benefit our herritage.

I wish I had read that bit before answering, that is so funny.
Forgive me kev, as I haven't heard of this new scheme, and haven't joined ukdetector net. Could you just explain what this new scheme is. Who is gooing to run it (an pay for it?) Who is going to collate all the records? and who is going to ensure that the finds are all recorded to an equal standard, and conserved if necessary?
Please don't think i am having a go, I just haven't come across this idea. Why do detectorist need an alternative to the PAS? Do they not trust them? Are they no good?
Is this scheme open to everyone. How do I find out about it. Are all the records available to all, once relative checks are done? Who is collating and disseminating the information? How does it fit into the strucures in place to update and compliment the archaeological record? How are the general public being informed about this scheme? I'd be interested in knowing the answer to all of these questions. Perhaps I can use this to record ALL the finds at the Groundwell dig this year. We will of course be recording EVERYTHING, each individual nail, each piece of pot, tile, glass and the organic stuff - as this is likely to be preserved in much the same way as the floor joist last year. It would be great to parallel record this info - who do I contact?

That seems to be the jist of it, those nasty people at the PAS are up to no good you know. It is all part of a wider scheme to ban detecting....<sighs>

Why on earth would anyone think that?
As a detectorist I am more than happy with the excellent outreach work that PAS have done and thank them for making me more aware of the impact my hobby has and the responsibility it carries, not to mention the wealth of information that the hobby contributes... long live PAS...
