Ummmmm. It was very long and a bit rambling. It was a bit lowbrow. The real question of whether peoples actually moved westward to populate the Atlantic fringes or whether they influenced through trade etc, was only touched on here and there and towards the end. I'm not sure there was anything new, but I did enjoy the naked warrior in his limewash. I'm not especially attuned to things "celtic", as my lousy bodhran playing attests, and I wasn't comfortable with the use of the blanket term to cover a wide range of european tribes. I'm really more concerned with how what we now call Europe was populated and by whom from where after the ice finally melted around here.

Very much like those other programs that Rudgely did,I think, none of which I can remember the title's of. Lot's of zippy camera shots everywhere and far too much reinactment for my taste, although I do realise it has it's place.

I actually stuck with this one, though (mainly because there was nothing else on Smile)and I thought that it actually gave a reasonably good basic guide to the period to those that are new to the subject and did at least emphasize strongly that the ancient Celt's are not really definable as a nation, which something that we've been trying to impress upon folk for years.

I must admit though, I kept thinking of Frank Delaneys BBC series of the same name from about twenty years ago and it's rather overblown romantic overtones. At least that had Enya's music to make it more memorable. Smile

Probably because there's a awful lot of information about the Celts to fit into one program, I guess. They could have done a lot more on a lot of other regions, such as Breton, Wales, even parts of England.

Big subject, unfortunately. It could really do with a series of programmes, I think.

True enough but there were two hours in which to fill and I would have welcomed more as you say on Breton and certainly cornwall

'Welsh aren't 'true' Celts' claim

THE MODERN nations that consider themselves to be Celtic are not actually anything to do with the "true Celts" who once dominated Iron Age Europe, according to anthropological research.

I remember the bit about language in which they said Cornwall translates as "horn of land". I've no idea if there is a genetic distinction but the map they showed late on implied the only interlopers lived around the Wash.

My personal take on "Celts" is that if they don't have a bagpipe in their traditional music line up, they are a bit borderline Wink
Actually I'm a great Carlos Nunez fan. That animated little guy from Galicia is astonishing.

Could someone at CH4 confirm that this was/wasn't a cut down version of the S4C series on the Celts minus all the Cornish heritage and Breton language research.....its causing a bit of confusion as it seemed 'familiar'to Welsh viewers who were treated to different spin on our collective heritage and Cornwall actualy exists in that series.I was under the impression this was 'new'.

No, this was a completely new prog (even if some of the ideas weren't). The series to which you refer was made by Pendefig based in Cardiff. That series paid little attention to the 'Celtic' debate that had already been going on for some years already. There was a rehashed English version which was pretty awful.

I had awoken in a cold sweat after a terrible dream in which an English XV were getting stuffed by the French. What a terrible thought,; thank goodness it was only my imagination working overtime.

By the way, anyone know the score?

Incidently, I saw this pragramme last night on More 4, having missed it first time round. It wasn't quite what I had expected.

Your ok.

England, ravaged by injuries to an extent that they had third choice players on the field, played with gusto and flair to completely dominate a French side, also ravaged by injuries, to an unprecedented 31-6 thumping.

Afterwards they all sang about St George in a rowdy manner.
