BRD Pryor Thread quote:
Germanist 09-07-05 20:40
Once again Francis Pryor has had the opportunity to spout his pro-Celtic and anti-Germanic biased view of English history. What has he against the Anglo-Saxons? Certainly not hard and fast evidence to disprove their conquest and mass-settlement of what eventually became England. Is political correctness a motivation for his disdain and denial of Englands Germanic roots?
Briefly, the points I had wanted to make to this and consequent posts were:
I don't see why anyone would think that Dr Pryor is anti-Anglo - Saxon, simply because he is willing to re-think and re-examine history. He is an archaeologist, not a historian and he uses the evidence of excavations to try and interpret the lives of past peoples whoever they were.
Why is he pro-Celtic? Because he refuses to blindly accept previous interpretations of Anglo-Saxon settlement? If anything I would say he is a Celtoskeptic. The use of the term 'Celt' in this context seems to reflect an unwillingness to accept, or perhaps an unawareness of changes in archaeological thought over the past ten years or so.
I feel very easy when people start talking about DNA and language in the same breath. They do not necessarily go together.
