Whatever the outcome of to-nights ‘Rugby’’ We know that the team would have done all within human ability to win, for both their country and we supporters.
What more could we ask?
Myself, not being impervious to a good celebration, I am building up to the pre-match dinner for my wife and I.
All tablets, medicines, etc, have been abandoned for the day.
A bottle of Moet-Chandon vintage is cooling in the fridge. So are two one and a half inches thick Sirloin stakes(the main course)To be preceded by the first course( King prawns, plus sliced crab on a salad bed) the final course will be bananas and Nestles full cream. This will be subdued by slightly over-cooked water biscuits supplied with both white and red Cheshire cheese. All to be finalised with a good bottle of ‘Madeira’
God! The sacrifices that I make for England!
Good luck to the team, I know that they will not let us down.

This week, saw Tesco put the clock back 100 years and re-establish the Barge traffic on the Manchester Ship Canal.
Sailing from the Queen Elisabeth Dock at Eastham, in the Wirral. A barge holding 20 containers set out for the 45 mile journey to Manchester.. It is to run for 6 months when the pro’s and cons will be assessed. As opposed to 20 Lorry engines, belching out fumes, there will be only one small Barge engine pottering along. One huge plus for the environment., not to mention the roads. And Tesco being the hard headed business men that they are, can anyone really envisage them embarking upon a capital venture such as this to take a substantial loss. I doubt it.

Ron.

Well, we tried at the rugby. I think it was a good match and we can be proud of the result! Well done team!!

Ron: I remember, being brought up in Bournville, watching the barges bringing supplies to and from Cadbury's. Most supplies came by rail and canal in those days. I had thought never to see such a sight again, but maybe....

1.6 million litres of wine. Assume it's all 70cl bottles. So 2.28 million bottles a week being shipped.
A bottle of wine weighs about a kilo. So the total weight carried is 2.28m kg or 2,280 tonnes per week.
An artic can hold 30 tons. But say that because of all the space around the wine bottles in their boxes, it can only carry 15 tonnes of wine per load. So that's 152 lorry journeys per week.
Time taken for a return trip between Manchester & Liverpool, including loading and unloading - say 4 hours. So one lorry could make 6 trips a day or 42 per week.
So to make the 152 lorry journeys per week you'd need 4 lorries. Which means moving all that wine by ship is only going to take 4 lorries off the roads, not 50.

You do make rather a lot of assumptions there Owain and I think they mean lorry journeys rather than actual vehicles.

Tesco say one lorry can carry 12,000 litres which suggests the load is limited more by volume than actual weight. I suspect the bottles will be carried in more than the cardboard boxes we get when we by a dozen bottles of wine as they wouldn't support the weight of more than a couple more boxes on top. They'd be fitted onto pallets too for loading/unloading which would take up more space.

Jenni, I enjoyed the match and the ‘meal’ was far superior to what I normally have-tablets!.

Arawn, there has been a further report on Granada TV News, but it was ambiguous. There may be two barges now operating on the Manchester Ship Canal for Tesco’s’
A spokesman stated that it is their intention to review the whole country to see if it is feasible elsewhere, but I think it as all a PR exercise with no great benefit elsewhere. Of the 3,000 miles of canal in GB, over 3,000 is for narrow boats which are now dated size wise and not economically commercial..

Does anyone remember when I mentioned that one of my grandchildren, aged 10, had become the world Cantu-Lever champion in ice skating? Well, his luck’s still holding. I broke my rule about not watching daytime TV yesterday, to see him voted yesterday’s winner by other children in a entertainment competition. He was doing acrobats on a trampoline His prizes were an Isopod and a Sony Video camera.
He is entered in Friday’s finals, where the prizes are an LCD TV. A Laptop and various other electronics valued at a few thousand pounds. He has 19 competitors, and everyone must devise a programme which is different to their normal routine.
I wish him good luck and I hope he wins!.

Ron.

Correction-Should have read, 2,500 is Narrow Boat canal, leaving only a tight few miles for Wide Boats.

After a national childrens vote he came third but still managed to win a Playstation 3, plus game. So this week he's done quite well financially. But the girl that won was very good ballet dancer.

Sorry, Ron, had awful problems trying to get on here for the past few days! Mad

Congratulations to him - you must be very proud. Thumbs Up Clapping Big Grin Seems to me though that his skill is far more unique and specialised than ballet dancing!

To all Ron’s Friends,

Hi my name is Ann and I’m Ron’s wife.
I sorry to have to tell you but Ron passed away on the 27th November due to the deterioration of his condition. He was in no pain, it was his breathing that failed. I was with him at the end, holding his hand, as was his son’s and he went very peacefully. He was extremely brave and never complained.

I know he would have wanted me to tell you this and not just abandon you. He loved writing on this forum with you all, whether it was about archaeology or not. He loved all the discussions even though he was a bit naughty sometimes and say something controversial just to liven things up. He used to tell me all the funny things you’d all say which made him laugh and happy. And I hope you will have happy memories of him.

I know he would want to wish you all good luck and if possible to keep the thread going.

Best wishes to you all
Ann (W)

I am very sorry to hear of your loss Ann.
My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
Ron will be greatly missed here for his knowledge and views , along with news of his travels around the world and especially for me North Wales.
The forum has lost one of its most highly regarded posters.

Go he went, to put his foot where never before a foot was put.

Ann,
Thinking of you and all your family. It is always hard to lose someone you love, but when it was someone with all the qualities shown by Ron on this forum, it must be doubly hard. Thank you for letting us know what we had begun to fear, but hoped against hope against.
All the best,
Valerie.
