Your programme last night (15.1.08) highlighted some of the problems metal detectorists have and I found it particularly unfair that a body with a vested interest in keeping offers low for treasure found should be the body which determines the "value" of such objects. The only fair way is for the metal detectorist to notify the authorities as presently required, then for the items to be sent to open auction where the museums can bid for the items against all comers, the proceeds going to the finders. In this way, the museums will pay the proper market value and the finders will receive the proper reward. Nothing else is fair in my opinion, but I can understand the museums would fight tooth and nail against any such change being implemented, as at present they pick up finds for a song. No, I am not a metal detectorist, I just like to see fair play.
