link 1
link 2

Link 1 refers to the present owner, and why it is up for sale.
Link 2 shows the what may happen if the culturaly important slopes are sold .

In Welsh peoples eyes this is the site of the battle and should be protected as part of our heritage.

It is Welsh people, as you put it, who have advanced alternative locations as the site of the battle.

I'm talking what the average punter can 'focus' on here.

As for protection, I understand that a group has been formed to purchase the site for its alleged heritage value.

I have a doubt if some 'patriots' I have spken too could raise the bus fare to get there, letalone buy the place...I hope I'm very, very wrong on this occasion.

Can't say I'm surprised though. I wonder if there is any chance of slapping some protected status on the land.

Not much chance of that, protected status only gets put on sites not under threat.

Isn't this open countryside where development is unlikely to be permitted?

I don't see why. There are developments dotted all around the open countryside. This isn't a National Park or an AONB or an SSI is it?

Take a look at the 1/25,000 OS map. Very isolated - hardly a building in site (medieval house Monaughty nearby) - and the 'battle' site looks to be on the flood plain.

Means an awful lot, actually. The Environment Agency and the Welsh Assembly have produced flood maps to ensure that development is not permitted in areas of risk.

Things might have been lax in the past - those days are over.

The Assembly offer 'advice' against building on flood plains and a glance at the 'flood maps' for Eastern Cardiff compared to its new housing developments show how strictly that advice is followed.

Remind me, how many months is it since the maps were published? And when was planning permission granted for the development?

Not in the sense that I used the word ie as defined by the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and understandable by anyone familiar with that legislation.

Fair play mind 3 housing developments,a proposed fourth a proposed hotel with golf course all within the flood zone show how 'flexible' rules are.
