Harbour Lane, Brinscall, Lancashire is on Roman Road line and I have read locally that it comes from derivation for temporary halt / waystation / stopping place for troops. Hope this is useful. Older maps give it as "Windy Arbour". I know someone will say "Oh, that's because there are trees there", but I agreee with you.

However, I recently noticed that some Coldharbours are also close to hillforts (as well as Roman roads). Take Egbury, near St Mary Bourne in Hampshire for example. In this context the name might make more sense. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone care?

Sorry D - is it 5 months yet? Only meant I hadn't mentioned Caer in original posting about "Crow Lane" / "Crow Trees". Still think there is a derivation somewhere. Found a Crow Lane at Adwick in Yorkshire down from my Garan/s the other week. Need a linguist to explain it.

"Sarn" usually refers to a causewayed / raised road or trackway. The word may not always apply to a Roman Road, but is a good indicator.

Hello

Has anyone tied up connections between Hare Roads (Here Roads - Saxon High Roads,ie Hereford where the Roman road fords the River Wye), and the positioning of Hare and Hounds Inns on roads that are Roman in origin?
