I've always had an interest in local history and whilst I was messing with live eart maps I noticed what appears to be a building outlines http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=53.009787~-0.4...&alt=-1000&encType=1 It looks as if it might have been a settlement of some kind, the area dates back to Norman times as far as I can tell, settled by the DeVessey family, according to a local historian. It is literaly a couple of miles east of the Ancaster dig although I've not heard of roman occupation on this site although there is a roman road (Mareham Lane) that runs through the eastern side of the nearby town of Sleaford. There have been Saxon finds near by in silk willoughby and Holdingham (now covered by McDonalds). Could be a site for a future show maybe
It looks like old field boundaries with possible structures in the plan. Then again thats the problems with cropmarks. In the field just to the east theres a couple of vaguely circular or oval features (or my eyes are going funny!) but they could be tractor related and the field below that looks like theres something going on there too.
had a look in the local library at the old map collection and found one from 1896, this lists it as a DMV, when I have time i will explore further. I bet there will be something in the county archive, shame its not online as I don't have a lot of time to go to Lincoln and nose around.
