Having accidently found out what the "hermitage" actually means, I was wondering about something that could be a bit of local history.
I live in a town called Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire and not so far from where I live is a street called "Hermitage Way". I was wondering if this was a clue to what may have been an Anglo-Saxon village in that area.
Anyone have any ideas? I dop know a little bit about the history of the town, but not back that far.
I don't see this as being a clue to an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the vicinity however, as hermitages were places where hermits lived a life of solitude and Christian contemplation etc through the middle ages into the Tudor period and during the Catholic repression during the Reformation.
That's an interesting point Pam. I never even thought of that link. It's not actually all that far from where the caves are situated. What's the chances of the Time Team crew getting over there to see what they can find in the area?
