I am posting this again as my original post 'disappeared' from the board! Went to visit Maiden Castle last week - very impressed with the huge ramparts - climbed up one to confirm it was as difficult as it looked! (I also got 'lost' in the fog and drizzle and had to text my partner to beep the car horn so I could could fond my way back!)One thing which did surprise me is the lack of sign posts / parking etc. It was even worse when I recently visited Llanmelin hill fort near Caerwent - very difficult to find. I wonder why these important sites are so poorly sign posted? on the way home I called into Chedworth Roman villa. Very enjoyable couple of hours and well worth a visit - even if you couldn't buy a cuppa!
Ive found that with a lot of hillforts. Danebury is even more elusive than Maiden Castle, theres no signposts for Almondbury, its just a case of "look for the big hill with the bumpy bits". Cadbury Castle on the other hand is quite well signposted but there is still a lack of parking. I guess they don't expect huge numbers of visitors. Old Oswestry is the worst. I drove past it on the main road but could not for the life of me find the road to get to the hill. Its absolutely ridiculous!!
