Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knows where i can get a copy of the episode about the dig at Whitestaunton Manor in Somerset. The ABC screened it this week here in Oz so you can see we are a bit behind the times down under. I am a relative of Charles Elton and the Eltons who lived at the manor for a few generations and am very keen to locate a copy of the episode for research into my family. many thanks to anyone who can help me.

What a fantastic connection! I always suspected that TT would be relevant to those Australians whose heritage had its origins in the UK, and would gain popularity here for that reason.

I remember the episode, but as you're probably aware individual episodes haven't been released for sale.

I did purchase "Time Team Digs The History Of Britain" DVD set a while back, but can't remember if Whitestaunton features on it. I'll take another look and get back to you if it does. There's a later DVD set, "TT Digs Your Garden", which as yet I haven't bought (have you noticed our exchange rate!) and don't know if it features on that. (Anyone out there able to advise?)

I don't know if ABC has a license to repeat broadcasts at some future time - you might want to keep an eye out for this if they do. Sorry I can't help out further. Good luck!

Mike

Regards to all,

Mike

Just another couple of thoughts "outside the square"...a correspondent from Canada in another forum mentioned that he was able to view episodes streamed from the web. I would presume this to be a subscription service and, therefore, above board.

I also have distant memories that TT is broadcast on Austar, on either its UK or History Channel. This would provide an alternative to relying soley on free-to-air. Best to check with them first though before you run and sign up for 12 months!

Hope this helps.

Regards to all,

Mike

Go to this Somerset County Council web site and click on the link to the Historic Environment Record. Then click on "view sites on a map" and in the box on the right on the map click "search" and write whitestaunton click on "show on map". You will find lots of info on the archaeological investigations carried out at whitestaunton and can email the council if you want any more..

You asked about Whitestaunton Manor ages ago. I actually live at Crickleaze, just within Whitestaunton parish, and built by Charles Elton. I believe it was Robert Elton who carried out the victorian dig at the manor. It was Fredrick Elton who lived here. Hope you've managed to track your family tree.
