Viewers of Time Team may be interested to know that the Kidderminster Civic Society are launching the ‘Historic Kidderminster’ project. Kidderminster is in Worcestershire, south west of Birmingham.
The Historic Kidderminster project, funded under the Local Heritage Initiative, is to be launched at a public meeting on Wednesday 5th July at the Chantry adjoining St. Mary's Church, Kidderminster, Worcestershire. The meeting starts at 7:30pm.
Devised by Kidderminster Civic Society and Worcestershire County Council's Archaeology Unit, the main purpose of the project is to create a public record of all significant sites and buildings which have existed during the town's long history dating back to Doomsday and Saxon times. Help will be needed from the public and a call will be made at the meeting for the contribution of information and other assistance from volunteers.
The archaeology unit holds the Historic Environment Record. The project will develop hundreds of Kidderminster entries on the record, which will be available in a hard copy or as a computer record assessable online to the general public.
Another part of the project is a proposed radar survey of St. Mary's churchyard in a first effort to locate a Saxon church or monastery, which is believed to have existed in the Kidderminster area.
