While watching the new series, we all know that some Ogham was discovered on the underside of a stone.
The TT members then panicked about getting it deciphered.
Can anyone tell me what happened to Robin Bush? I am sure he could read Ogham very well?

Robin and Time Team parted company some five or six years ago. I'm not sure about his abilities concerning Ogham. I know that he has explained how it works on programmes in the past (Llangorse? Govan?) but I 'm not sure that he could decipher Early Medieval Gaelic Ogham phrases. I'm sure someone out there will tell me if I am wrong.

The TT website has a potted biog if you are interested.

Robin wasn't required to read Ogham well on Time Team. The Ogham inscription found in the Isle of Man was the very first actually discovered by TT. Other Ogham inscriptions tend to be well-known and published in translation long ago.

I remember Robin explaining the Ogham system on one of the early programmes. That scene seems to have stuck in other memories too!

I think I can recall dealing with Ogham at Llangorse when filming small gravestones in the churchyard while sitting on a very uncomfortable bucket! I was never an expert on the subject but mugged it up for the programme.

I did the same for runes on the pilot episode at Dorchester-on-Thames but that, of course, was never broadcast.

I thought it was a cemetery! I haven't seen that programme since it was first broadcast, but I can recall you pointing to marks down the side of a stone.

Good to see you back here Robin. Now we can get answers to this type of question from the horse's mouth.

I think they were at Llangasty church on the other side of the lake. There are quite a few Ogham inscriptions in that area, some have been removed and are now housed in museums. Churches often take them in for safe keeping too.
