Mr Robinson has made no secret of his particular politcal opinions, but would it hurt his left wing pride so much to refer to the Monarch as "Her Majesty"?. I also found his over familiar tone when addressing Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip highly offesnive. This odious anti-royal individual should keep his obvious disdain for the Royals in check and respect the fact this this country as still a Monarchy and a great many viewers are very proud of this fact. I am sure if the digging was taking place at number 10 Downing street we would see Tony (R) in his element fawning over his hero Tony (B).

When you meet a memeber of the Royal Family "it's Your Majesty" if it's the Queen or "your royal highness" if it's anyone else the first time you address them and then "sir" or "ma'm" depending on gender thereafter. What was Tony doing wrong?

Wasn't it somewhat hypocritical of a true-red republican like Mr. Robinson to be even attending a Royal Garden Party and chatting amicably with people he sneeringly looks down his nose at?

Disapproving of the institution of monarchy doesn't mean you have to be nasty to the human beings which inhabit it.

It's already happened! During a dig at Sedgefield, our illustrious leader put in an appearance! Never one to miss an opportunity to show us how much he is 'one of us'.

Oh for heaven's sake!
This is C21 people!
WHy should Tony Robinson or anyone else hide their politics?
What would you prefer? forelock tugging sycophants?
I think Tony as an 'odiuous antiroyal' is doing well, I can imagine the comments I'd be making if I were in his place!

Indeed!

They're all behaving like grownups and enjoying the opportunity for what it is.

No one ever seems to do civic studies as we used to in school.

One of the things I always rememeber is that it is only the Monarchy -however worthy or unworthy the monarch (and I happen to think we are exceptionally lucky in this one) that keeps us from having a President thrust upon us with all that that entails!

Seeing that this PM is such an ardent admirer of GWB -do we really want an elcted President without any brakes in power? Already this government has tried to make the armed forces responsible to the ruling party -in theory the
M Onarch does have the right to command them and they swear allegience to her not the P.M. as does the judiciary.

THis PM doesn't want to leave office, allies us with a foreign power (USA) and spends all our taxes as if by Divine Right - Long Live H.M.

Read what happened last time we experimented with a republic! There is a folk song about it - 'The World is Turned Upside Down'

They wisely kept their heads down and stayed away. There again I bet Phil would've had just the right put down for that woman at Windsor.

One has always felt that the Royal Family take odiousness to unimagined heights.

And a moron for a President isn't the exclusive option.

I did watch the Royal digs coverage and do not feel that Tony showed the Queen any disrespect. Do not archaeologists uncover evidence of our rich history and heritage on a daily basis? Like it or not the Royals are a living link to a large part of that heritage.

I read an article recently, which showed that the cost of maintaining the Royals per head of population per week is around one penny. Would as many tourists visit the UK without them?

I've never met a tourist who has come to see the Royals but then I don't go into Central London very often. I think it would be better for the UK generally if tourists were not all focused on the capital.

Would a 15 year old know about the Romanov's these days? I doubt it. And my mother, were she not dead, would share my views. She may well be sharing a joke with Tsar Nicholas as I type. I'd like to think so.

Your punctuation and spelling are somewhat poor Ron, or was it the apoplexy getting to you.

Over the years, I've come to respect the Queen as a rather remarkable individual who has done a fantastic job. I don't have very much faith in her successors, though and there are various other minor members who are, frankly, no use nor ornament and should be quitely shuffled aside. Smile

The monarchy as an institution, is something I'm less enthusiastic about. At the moment though, my feeling is "if it aint broke, don't fix it" Currently, its better then having President Blair (Or even in the past, President Thatcher Smile)but that doesn't mean that it's always going to be the case, nor should we slip back into the mindset that we can't get rid of them because "They've always been there"

We live in a less rigidly defined world now, where class divisions are becoming more blurred and few have the unquestioning acceptance that was prevalent with my parents genaration,of how society worked. People (and that includes the Royals) are expected to earnthe respect of others, something which is a legacy of the Thatcher years, ironically.

Now then, It's the Circle Line for Tower Hill isn't it? Big Grin

Hmm. I think it is time to go up to the attic and get my bust out. My bust of Lenin, that is - it's up there somewhere with my poster of Che and my 'Free Nelson Mandela' T-Shirt.

Chris, your post sums up the picture perfectly, and I agree with every word.
What always suprises me, is at the mention of the Queen, all the unbalanced morons from below the surface suddenly appear! Quite amazing.
Possibly the best policy to adopt, is treat them with the contempt they deserve and ignore them.

Ron.
