In the 1950s my great uncle, Rev Walter Denbow, researched our family history, and he found the book of AV Watney's "Wallop Family" in Exeter library, with an entry for the Deneband family, starting from Sir John Deneband who was quoted as 'Lord of Porsceurt in Wales'. Deneband was one of the names quoted in the Portskewett programme as being given rights there in about 1300. He married Alice Gifford of Hinton St George. No dates are quoted, but his grandson was Philip Deneband, whom we know was a bailiff/clerk in Exeter 1305/6 and MP for Exeter in 1309, and established/lived at the (Manor) house and farm at "Denbow" near Farringdon in Devon. So Sir John's marriage/activity in Portskewett was probably around 1220. We believe the Deneband, Denbaud and Denebaud names are the earlier names for what is now the Denbow family. I gather from my friends in Denbow Thatch (at Denbow) that the Time Team is going to Farringdon near Exeter later this year: there are many links from there to the Paulets, now the family name at Hinton St George, and to Denbows: there is a Paulet and Denbow combined crest in Tor Abbey in Torquay.
