I took my son to his first YAC session on Saturday. Unfortunately it was a bit boring as the chap who was supposed to running the workshop on stone carving had had an accident.
What activities do other branches do? Are there any YAs here, or does anyone have children going to YAC events?
The Summer issue of Young Archaeologist has a nice article by Raksha Dave on the Time Team dig at Portskewett in Gwent. A little Anglo-centric, but we won't go there again.
I help to run a YAC club as a leader.. we are off this Sunday to teh Coast to take photos of sites and places threatened by erosion... for a competition... then we are doing a heritage Geocache race round an industrial open air museum.. and I have to say a big thanks to a Roman re-eancator who had the kids turned from a rabble to a roman army unit in 2 hours!! able to carry out orders in Latin ) bless!
I'm YAC Branch Leader, if you google for South Wiltshire YAC, you'll find our website which tells you what we've done and what we're going to be doing. Over the years we've tried our hands at most things, including our own excavation
Always open to suggestions for other ideas though, we try to get out and about as much as possible but use Salisbury Museum as our base as the lecture hall is perfect for all indoor activities.
Thanks BAJR & Cally. I have taken my boy to a few meetings at the Bridgend branch. They have a website which helps us keep up with events (although we have been unable to go to anything for a while now), but the other branch in south east Wales at Caerleon has not which makes it tricky. Being in Cardiff, Capital City of Wales and the National Museum of Wales, it seems a bit strange that there is no branch here. As some of you know, I have to rely on public transport and it can be a bit of a pain getting to the usual venues, let alone field trips.
I have toyed with the idea of approaching YAC and/or CBA Wales about the possibilities of starting a Cardiff branch. Any thoughts? .
How goes it... have you had a chance to talk to CBA YAC?
just come back from a tiring but fun walk out into a beautiful bay in Aberlady (East Lothian ) to photograph wrecked midget subs.. for teh Photo competition about the eroding coastal archaeology.
Thanks. I sent off an e-mail last night, but no reply yet. I hope I am not treading on any toes, as the Caerleon branch is the South East Wales branch. However, you've seen my reasons for wanting a more local branch.
For the past academic year, I have been touring primary schools in the area with a workshop on Roman archaeology and not one pupil has come forward to admit to being a YAC member. I have found that a bit surprising too, which is another reason that the Capital may well be ready for its own branch.
Sounds like a good enough reason to start another... If you don't hear from them... give em a call... they are great people at the CBA... and now that Mike Heyworth is an MBE... they can only get better
The big push is for getting more people involved... so I see no problems... other than you spending a lot of time thinking... I wish I was in Kansas... I wish I was in Kansas... heeeeeeeeeeeeelp... ... phew... actually that was great.!
You sound like such a perfect YAC leader.. I wish I had your drive
