It's the closing date to propose an activity, not to take part as detailed on the link above.

Do you think it would be alright to apply for more than one activity (in case you don't get accapted for one - or simply for a bit of variety) or do you commit yourself to one only?

If you're asking me, I'd have to say that it's up to you to decide that one ....

Steve, It asks you to log in. Is the user name and password the same as here? If so it doesn't work!! If it isn't how can you register because there doesn't seem to be a link for that either lol

John

I love it when a plan comes together.

The username and login on that site isn't the same as on the forum. It applies only to people who've applied (and been accepted) to take part in one of the BRD activities.

I may be doing something at the Cinderbury project in Gloucestershire, but if they're not included then I may have an opening in the diary for anyone who requires a living history display at such an event.

Bloomin' Heck! I didn't know about this one.... when did all this happen?

Having been away, this 'Big Roman Dig' must have been publicised during my absence. Is it really too late to take part?

It's my favourite period y'know....

I presume for the photo assignment you choose your own local Roman site. It occurs to me that since I moved to Bedfordshire I don't have the remotest idea what Roman stuff is nearby. Plenty of DMVs and roads that were Roman and are now tarmac.

I was tempted to do a desktop survey, but after reading the small print about signing over the copyright on everything you provide for free, I thought '**** that for a game of soldiers!'

ALL roads lead to Rome - even if some of them don't even leave the boundaries of Salford.

Almost 2,000 years after it was first laid, a Roman road is about to be uncovered again in Ellesmere Park as part of a nationwide archeological dig.

But unlike any other Roman road, this one isn’t straight.

Timed to co-incide with Channel 4’s popular programme Time Team’s ‘Big Roman Dig’ from Sunday, June 26 to Saturday, July 16, the road, which stretches across fields between Cavendish and Chatsworth roads will be excavated by a team of enthusiastic volunteers.

The project has been spearheaded by the Ellesmere Park Residents Association, with sponsorship from developers Miller Homes and Hurst Engineering, plus extra grants and help from the Eccles Community Committee.

Six schools and colleges will take part, with help from residents from Ellesmere Park. The schools involved include Monton Green Primary, Chatsworth High, Oakwood High, Wentworth and Clarendon Road schools and Eccles College.

Over the three-week period over 200 children will have the opportunity to undertake some real archaeology in their own neighbourhood.

Association treasurer John Rabbitt, who is leading the team, said: “I have known about the existence of the road for 25 years. The last time it was uncovered was in an ad hoc way by students at Eccles College in the early 1970s, under the supervision of local historian Frank Mullineux.

“It has been covered up ever since. We are going to cut a trench across where the road is and dig down to a certain depth and then leave it for the excavators to do the rest.

“Pictures will be taken and then the area will be returfed.”

The road linked Castlefield (Mamucium) with Wigan (Coccium) and went along the line of Liverpool Street, in Salford, through Eccles, Chorlton Fold, Worsley, Boothstown and on to Wigan.

Virtually all the Roman road has disappeared over the centuries, and the section in Ellesmere Park be may one of the few parts remaining.

For more information on the dig and other Roman excavations in the area visit the Time Team Big Roman Dig website at: http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/B/bigromandig.

Help - I live just two miles from Dinnington and have been asked to provide catering facilities to the site throughout the Big Dig to help raise money for the local village church. Can you give me any idea of the number of visitors we can expect on site over the course of the three weeks of the Dig.
