Thanks Pam

What's everyone been up to? I'm afraid I've been too busy to visit lately and will be for a while now as I'm in the middle of my course.

Good luck with the module!
Yes, Spring Bash sounds like a good idea - I might actually be able to come! Any ideas??

ALSO for anyone in the York area tomorrow (Saturday 25th 10am-4pm) York Archaeological Trust are having an open day at one of their current commercial digs. I believe its Roman buildings and stuff. The site is on Tadcaster Road, opposite the Holiday Inn (ish). Apparently if you park at the Park n Ride at Askham Bar (near Tescos) its a short walk from there. I am going to pop along but I don't know what time.

Sorry to barge in on your thread, but does anyone want a free copy of the two Northern Mine Research Society's "Lead Mining in the Derwent Valley" and "The Mines of Yorkshire" (vols 70 and 72). We've found we have duplicates but we're reluctant to throw them out - goes against the grain where books are concerned! They are free to a good home - I'll check the thread over the weekend in case there is anyone, and if so I'll post a number for you to contact.

Hi Cornishman, if those books have any refs. to ancient mining methods i would dearly love a copy of any bits that would give a clue or two as to finding old mines.I know from old records and local tales that copper was mined just 2-3 miles north of my home, but I'm damned if I can find the mine. This mining is pre-historic,maybe Celtic, would love to see some info as to tracking down old mining sites.H

They are both pretty comprehensive - no 70 has more text, dealing with lead mining up to 1600, then each century beyond. It covers the mining areas of Blanchland, Ramshaw, Townfield, Edmundbyers and Healyfield. It's a nice book to read for the history (social and mining) as well as about the mines/locations. No 72 is a pretty comprehensive gazetteer of locations (across Yorkshire) and data - the mines cover copper, but also lead, silver, zinc, ironstone and the rest. Both are good quality paperback. But as I say they are free, so if you do want them you can always glean what you want from them and pass them on elsewhere. Interested? If so, I'll give you my mobile number as a contact point.

I'd be interested too, I've been researching lead mining in Yorkshire for quite some time.

I'd doubt they will include much info on ancient mining at all, it is generally regarded as being virtually unproven by most of the writers I have seen and they simply include a vague reference to it being a possiblitiy in the Roman period. I'd welcome being proved wrong.

Venutius -
Horace hasn't replied so they are yours, if you are still interested. As I said, no charge - I just need an address to post them to. Suggest you give me a ring rather than you post in on the website - my mobile number is 07753 740428

I visited Arbeia a couple of years ago when I was studying a module on Roman York and the North. It was interesting (if cold and damp, but it was December!), especially the reconstructed gate and commander's house. I would be interested in a re-visit but perhaps during the summer digging season (assuming they are continuing this year) so that there is something extra to see ( The Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle is also worth a look and is on the other end of the Metrol line from South Shields!)

As for York - I would recommend leaving York for a summer visit aswell. The dig at St Leonard's starts Mid-June this year and is well worth a visit (although I am biased - I dug there last summer and hope to again this year)

Ilkley - not been there is ages! Can anyone tell me what there is to see/do, either in the town or outskirts? Apart from Betty's and the Cow and Calf I am clueless!

My suggestions would be Ryedale Folk Museum (depending on when it opens for the season) and Pickering Castle & Church (perhaps both places if transport is OK).

I would be interested in any or all of these suggestions ..... depending on dates and the availability of dog sitters (my resident dogsitter having taken himself off to university!) Smile

Just a thought:-

http://www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/getinvolved/festival.htm

This is something I have always wanted to go to - but have never managed (mainly cos I have a timeshare holiday in late January, so money isn't available for trips away) - but for those of you closer to hand it might make an interesting early spring outing?

BTW does Ilkey still have its outdoor swimming pool??

Sorry for the change of name (Jane here) but I've had a carry on with this wonderful machine and it wouldn't let me log in under Jane so I've had to log in under Woolly instead. Confused

It doesn't seem long since our last visit to York (although we didn't go to Yorvik) and I must admit I'd rather try somewhere else.

I'd be really interested in going to Pickering castle and church - there are some fantastic medieval wall paintings in the church and it would be lovely if we could find someone to give us a tour! There are also quite a few places to eat in Pickering. Also Ryedale Folk Museum would be a good place to see.

I visited Arbeia last year so would not be very interested in going again.

I've never been to Ilkley and wonder what there is to see and do too Pam. Maybe Venutious can give us an idea.

As usual I'm quite willing to go with the majority. What sort of dates are we looking at.

Jane

Pickering is a very good idea. There is also the Belle Isle Museum in the centre of the town.

I also agree that the Rydale Folk Museum is well worth a visit.
