That looks to be an interesting dig, something a little different.
I wish we had some of that weather here now. Smile

Why was Damian Boatbuilder walking around with a leaf in his pocket? Is the man mad, or is it some arcane practice - a "ritual", perhaps?

excellent programme..shame about the site having to be filled in and covered with a bicycle park (shades of joni mitchell, paradise and a parking lot)

No idea but Damian is, from what I remember, a tad eccentric at times Big Grin

Like everyone else I thought this was brilliant. Only concentrating on one aspect (the boat, with the brief exception of the geophys) made it feel like a TT Special, but the boat was so amazing that it probably warrented the prime focus.

Did they mention the nationality of the boaten at Utrecht? The ones at South Shields were Iraqi, so wondered if these would have been too.

Surprised someone hasn't mentioned the taking of a chainsaw to a piece of wood... Half expected to see 100+ replies on this thread when I logged on!

Very good programme.
I did wonder if the barges may have been used to transport some of the stones they found ?

I kept expecting Ria to pop up Smile

I was surprised to see two Roman experts, Guy de la B and Birgitta Hoffmann. Much as I like and admire them both, neither seemed to have very much to do.

I was a bit disappointed - from the prelim about a boat being "found", I actually expected TT to make the discovery, not for the archaeologiests to know exactly where it was and almost everything about it except its age! The "solving a mystery" aspect of TT is one of my favourites and there didn't seem to much of a mystery here - the Dutch archaeologists just seemed to want the publicity (in a nice way!) and manpower.

Can someone explain to me why they needed a chainsaw when Mick the Twig only seems to use a large apple-corer? Confused (That is a genuine query by the way, no criticism intended! Smile)

The programme didn't beat last week's, IMHO.

Exceptional program in terms of the archaeology of Roman boats. Not a typical TT episode though as much of the team seemed redundant. As already said the Dutch team were the winners in terms of publicity and resources.

It was a collaborative venture, as many others have been, and I think a very productive one. I like boats and this one was a beut. I've nothing against chain-saw archaeology, provided you know where you took the sample from. No point in faffing about with spatulas when you need a lot of tree rings and the thing's about to be buried under a metalled cycle path.
What I failed to register, is whether the boat was a Roman pattern or a local pattern.

First post woohoo!!

Did anyone notice what the instument was called that they used to record the position of the planks etc. Looked interesting, much more suited to confined spaces than a typical total station / topographical survey.

I presume it had to be moved for storage reasonably quick. If that was the case then an apple-corer V a chainsaw only has one winner. Big Grin

The cargo limits that were mentioned in regards to the other barge that was found were interesting.

They said that the barge wouldn't have been laden with full sacks of grain (as it would have sunk) and it probably held scattered cargo in the form of various pots along its length.

How many Legionaries could it have carried?
