Biggest-ever re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings
THOUSANDS of top performers from across the world will gather to replay England's most famous battle.
It promises to be the most spectacular recreation ever of the bloody event which changed the course of history - the Battle of Hastings.
More than 2,000 Norman and Saxon troops, from as far afield as New Zealand and Iceland, will take to the very battlefield where William, Duke of Normandy, and Saxon King Harold, fought long and hard for the crown of England.
The thunder of hooves, the roar of the battle cry and clash of metal on metal will set pulses racing as the two great adversaries, accompanied by members of their loyal troops and mounted knights, recapture the tension and thrill of the fight at Battle Abbey.
Building up to the main battle action at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday (October 14 and 15), visitors can soak up the atmosphere of Norman and Saxon life in a superb living history encampment showing what everyday life was like for both soldiers and ordinary people during the time.
Gates open at 10am with other activities to enjoy including a bustling marketplace, period music, archery and falconry displays.
There will also be themed activities for children, including the chance to take part in a 'Big Bayeux Cartoon Challenge'.
A spectacular finale will take place in Hastings with the annual Hastings Day bonfire parade along the seafront and free firework display. The parade starts at 7.45pm.
Admission prices for the Battle of Hastings event are £12.50 for adults, £9.40 for concessions and £6.30 for children. A family ticket is also available at £31.30.
There are reductions for English Heritage members and free entry for under fives. To pre-book tickets call 0870 333 1183 or visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/1066.
English Heritage has also teamed up with Southern Trains to offer inclusive discounted rail and entry tickets to the Battle of Hastings. Only available online, the offer includes reduced return travel by train from any Southern Trains station and half-price entry to the event. Visit www.southernrailway.com for more information.
