It has taken me a good five minutes to log in and get this far. Considering there is a brand new series of Time Team airing, and we are only coming up the third episode, this forum should be alight and vibrant.

Where is everybody? Where are the lively discussions??

Well, I have been doing my best! Smile

I don't think that it helped having the 'sticky' thread for the last show came on late after another thread had already started. It sort of divided the potential debate. Also, there is a further split with some regulars keeping their comments to the unofficial TTFF forum on the ourpast site.

Anyway, at least there have been a few posts on the shows. Last year was worse I think. we could do with getting rid of a couple of the stickies and posting new threads rather than feeling obliged to keep within the designated areas. Also, the moderation does not help. Some people have had long threads deleted with no explanation given. I came close to giving up on this place after it happened to me. You can't even recommend links to other sites without half expecting the entire thread to disappear. Cally can't even post a link to her Tony Robinson website although he's the bloody presenter and an associate producer of the show we are discussing!

Right, I'm off for a pint!

Hi,
I Am new to both Archaeology/History and the whole forum thing. I think for us new guys the whole forum thing is a bit daunting, especially with the obvious regulars knowing so much and having their own rapport. This may be why things are a bit quiet. People like me just watch and don't join in! Confused

Hi NTT07, and welcome!

You've taken the plunge, so stay with us! We were all new once - the old hands only got to know one another by starting somewhere. Don't be afraid to ask questions, because everyone loves it if they know the answer and can help. Try a comment after watching one of the programmes: there will always be someone who wants to chat about it.

How did you get interested in archaeology, and Time Team in particular? I have watched it from the first series, because I had always been interested, especially in the Romans, since visiting Chester and Wroxeter as a child. After several years as an armchair fan I decided to do something more about it and went to evening classes. That eventually led to my going back to university as a mature student, and it's been the best thing I've ever done in my life.

Thanks for your friendly reply.
I remember being interested in Dinosaurs and history when i was a small kid but didn't really take it any further as i grew up other than do GCSE's in Greek Civilisation & History. I recently had a small health scare (that turned out ok)that really got me to think that i need to pull my finger out and start to do the things i always wanted to do.Learn about Archaeology being the first. I have a small child so in between work and being a dad i haven't had much time for TT in the past but have recently bought the "Best Of" DVD and the TT book "What Happened When" and am trying to learn as much as i can.
Sorry for the life story, got carried away Big Grin

Nice to chat to you! You'll enjoy catching up with TT - as well as the DVDs and books there are regular programme repeats on Discovery and More4. Then there's the internet, and your local library and museum, and fascinating places to visit all over Britain - a good excuse to take the youngster to visit them too!

Don't be afraid to ask questions if there's something you don't know or understand. A lot of the regulars here will gladly be willing to answer questions or give explanations over a pint at the "Trench Fell Inn". Big Grin

Speaking of which.... I must go and change the barrels. Big Grin

A lot of people I know simply read this stuff to chill out for half an hour, and never comment unless they feel strongly about a subject .Some read the collated articles they would otherwise miss and see others opinions on TTs findings on the show.....most of whom just don't like to post on forums.

So where is the link to tonight's programme that Steve Platt normally posts? There's something amiss if that can't be done in time for the episode to enable people to see what's coming on and possibly comment on it before the start, as they always used to!!!

Come on CH4 and S. Platt, lets get this forum running as it used to!!!

Hi kittypuss, and welcome!

Did you manage to get a look at the site when they were filming in your area, or did you only find out about it after they had been and gone again? That's happened to me on a few occasions over the years - never managed to see them in action yet.

7 or 8 years ago you could buy a T-Shirt through the Time Team Club, and I think a fleece. There was talk at the time of various TT clothing but nothing ever seemed to happen.

[quote]I have a small child so in between work and being a dad i haven't had much time for TT in the past"

May I put in a plea for local history groups.

When my children were small and my husband spent many weeks abroad I joined our local history group. I was able to - for instance -bring home the church registers from which with suggestions from our resident historian I was able to build up a picture of life in the parish in the 18th & 19th C. From our local Roman site -walking kids and dog and getting them all picking up pottery etc was who appreciate a good exercise for all. Studying the local architecture built up a picture of the settlementfrom medieval to modern times. We have luckily always had an expert to guide us but its been 'hands on' experience . Now, years later I am still using the data I collected and putting it into a file for visitors who appreciate it especially when they come looking for ancestors
