I'm sure I heard that story about the Iceman quite a while ago.

How a treasure hunter struck gold with a mysterious ring

Had it not been for one last, high-pitched quack from his metal detector, John Wood might have called it a day. Instead, he stuck his trowel in the ground and poked around. In all probability, it would turn out to be another nail or a tin.

What, half of £750K for getting lucky while out enjoying themselves one afternoon whilst the whole of the Silbury stabilisation and research project is being carried out in very difficult circumstances having been allocated only £600K.

Nothing wrong with that situation then is there?

Seems not.
Well I for one don't mind standing up and saying its an outrageous state of affairs and I'll take the silence as confirming everyone else does too, though some choose to avoid saying so.

I don't normally comment on MD threads, or news articles on the "hobby", but Silaction, you deserve a reply...

I too think it outrageous that The Silbury project is underfunded, but on the other hand, these Metal Detector hobbyists have, at least, done the right thing by declaring the find? This way, surely, it would encourage others to declare, where otherwise they may be tempted to sell it at an on-line auction site to raise money, risking the finds going abroad or being broken up?

I feel very strongly about protecting our heritage, and in my book, anything that encourages this is, if not totally acceptable in some eyes, at least getting some way to being right.

Well, the Silbury project has today run into terrifying problems. A few hundred thousand pounds are going to be desperately needed now I should imagine. That being so I don't have the stomach to discuss the overblown rewards of the heritage heroes (who, to a man, claim they're in it for the love of history, not financial reward.) Let these two lucky lads donate half their winnings to the Silbury Project Team, for the love of history, and I'll rethink my position.... !

At the risk of hijacking this thread, how come one of our most famous and precious heritage sites hasn't come in for all the money needed for the project from the Lottery Fund? Failing that a public appeal? (If there has been one, I haven't seen it)!

Mesopotamian city grew regardless of kingly rule

Story about Tell Brak notable for the archaeologist named Jason Ur - most appropriate for studying mesopotamian cities - this one being in Syria so rather safer than Iraq. I guess that in his spare time he would liike to help Bob Ballard with marine archaeology in the Black Sea...
