Further to our unhabited properted in Normandy France, after searching for the tunnel which was found, last week, we found a Lake! terribly overgrown since the property has been left for over 100 years, except for the invasion of WWII whne the Panzer division stayed for a while. However this weird, if I can discribe it, first of all we found the circle hidden under the self seeding trees, then the sluce gate, but this led to a long very deep ditch, about 100 metres maybe more, to a another lake but this is in a perfect circle with well established trees in the centre, Any one have any ideas who would have built this and what type of fish would live here, sadly the outside cannot see, so the road only a few metres away the otherside of the very tall stone wall, would have fed the lake with water, but they have put in drainage and the lake gets dry, unless we have one of those very large rats that make big holes in lake walls? your suggestions please we are mystified at the design... the sluce gate is mostly heavy timber and seized, and very simple in design, any ideas please...
Dear Sue, I was absolutely fascinated by your first thread, what an exciting building to have. I should think, as your property seems to have been built by the Templars, that the lake was probably made fot carp, which was the staple of religious houses (fish on Fridays and fast days) for many years. In the days when it was constructed, beaver may have still been around in Europe - they could have made the holes.
