The smoke rises. If you are lying down to sleep the smoke is not so much of a problem. There is a certain level where the smoke stops, more or less and I'm sure builders of houses would have been aware of that.

I've spent a couple of nights in a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse...

But you must have suffered some smoke inhalation problems? And did you use modern sleeping bags or what? Thanks.

No smoke inhallation problems at all. The thatch provided excellent ventilation. Of course it made sense not to burn anything too wet, naturally.

And yes we did use modern sleeping bags as we were in Wales and weren't that keen on being too authentic as it was a party! Big Grin Both occasions were in the autumn though, and even though the temprature was fairly chilly, I found I didn't really need mine. They are extremely well insulated when built properly

And I missed it too! Because it was Easter Sunday and a last minute family invasion with treasure hunts and Disney videos being watched etc etc......

I don't get more4, so does anyone have a recording I could borrow? I am excellent at returning borrowed items.

I regularly visit Applecross and stay on the campsite featured. I was there on Sunday / Monday 14th - 15th May 2006. The site has obviously been restored, but you can still make out the trenches used for the dig.
However, I was unaware transmission took place and was later told by a friend.
Does anybody know when the next repeat transmission will be.
Or alternatively can anybody lend me a copy.

I'm late to this thread as only just watched this last edition.

I wondered if there were any thoughts on the sheer skill and effort needed to build such a very substantial dry stone building? How many man-days would it have taken? Has there been any practical experimentation, in a similar way that we often see with pyramid reconstruction?
