How about Camp Witley near Godalming in Surrey? It was a huge camp for Canadian soldiers in the first and second world wars. There's mention to the Canadians and Camp Witley everywhere in the area, but even the National Trust on the site of the camp has nothing and seems to be very keen to find out more. Only the path names like 'Soldiers Walk', 'Baseball Diamond' and 'Parade Ground' give any clues as to what was once there. There's a postcard at the Trust centre showing a baseball game going on and I've read on the internet about a game between the officers taking place during the First World War. But the baseball diamond is now overgrown with scrub. There doesn't seem to be ANYthing left of the camp, yet seeing postcards being sold on ebay and internet, it was obviously huge. There are many Canadian graves in Milford, the bandstand in Godalming was rebuilt with Canadian money having been burnt down by Canadians on VE Day, the wooden cladding in Witley church was put in by the Canadians, their names and units from WW1 are written in the visitors book at Cowdray House in Midhurst and when a German bomber hit Petworth Boys School in WW2, the Canadians, in the pub close by, came to help. Everywhere I go round here, there's always something which leads back to the Canadian troops and Camp Witley. I can't find any physical evidence of the camp at all, yet the National Trust people on the site, which is now all National Trust land, want to find out more. It'd be wonderful for Time Team to turn up something of the camp, because unless you find its influence in the surrounding towns, you'd never know it was there. It played a massive part of our local history and since WW2 it seems to have been largely forgotten by many, but as the NT visitors centre told me, there are also plenty of people asking about it. The NT people, though, haven't got much to tell them at all. Much as I enjoy watching Roman and medieval sites being dug, I can't help feeling this piece of history will just slip away to be totally forgotten unless someone has the clout to revive it and put its memory back on the map, as opposed to just a few old postcards and place names.
