Every time I see Time Team there's this little rattle in the back of my head...

There's a site near my hometown in the midst of the island of Ireland where there is supposed to be a monastery, but no one is sure. I always thought it would make a fantastic Time Team show.

But a question... would Time Team considering coming to Ireland? And if so, how do I pitch them on the idea?

Aye, "Craic" is the word you're after.

So - how about that question of mine: For starters, has any Time Team episode ever been shot outside the UK?

Yes a few programmes have been shot outide the UK. Time Team has explored the possibility of digging in the Republic of Ireland, but so far nothing has come of it. Prof. Aston loves Ireland, so I'm sure he would be pleased if a programme could be made there.

Any idea how one might pitch an idea to the producers and/or Prof. Aston?

I wonder if it's as hard to mount a dig in Ireland as it is in Northern Ireland - where as we've discussed recently, there's a layer of red tape that's different to GB. I'm surprised they've never been to the South. It would be very interesting, I'm sure.

when i was in ireland i can remember wondering around the remains of a broch and there is the famous Hill of Tara said to be the seat of the ancient kings of ireland - de danann? there is all that mythology - Queen Maeve, (the tain) the cattle raid of cooley etc etc The VIkings founded the city of dublin for instance.

Are there many passage graves in the south?

HAVE any remains of roman expeditions been found in the republic?

i can remember reading once that one of the early populations that colonised ireland came from the Iberian peninsular and were short with dark hair. pre celt?

and where do all those stories about leprechauns come from? LOL

A view of the Romans in Ireland from Britarch.

http://www.britarch.ac.uk/ba/ba14/ba14feat.html

One or two mysteries for TT to solve there perhaps.

So no obvious reason that TT wouldn't come to RoI then? Good. In that case a pitch I will make. Let's see what comes of it.

I would love to see Time Team in Ireland.

I have a Professor who works in Queen's University Belfast who knows the Time team personally.

Have you thought of getting in touch with them? That tends to be the way things are done.

speaking of the time time visting ireland, i just saw this on www.rte.ie as regards a substantial national monument just discovered in meath
**********************************************
The Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, has ordered that work be stopped on the M3 motorway near Tara, Co Meath, because of the discovery of a substantial national monument.

Yesterday, the Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen turned the first sod on the M3 motorway.

The archaeological site was discovered in Lismullen beside the Hill of Tara, and is said to be the size of three football fields.

It has been described as a massive prehistoric site.
***********************************************

Might be one for them to get involved in

I don't know, but perhaps there is a different attitude by the Irish, towards their archaeology.
Are they more protective of their archaeology than perhaps archaeologists in England, Wales and Scotland ?, where a visit by Time Team is often seen as a valuable contribution to their project.
Both in financial and public awareness terms.

There have been two Time Team digs in Northern Ireland:-
Navan, Co. Armagh in 1996
Downpatrick, Co. Down in 1998.
Nothing since then
