Imagine if they uncovered the remains of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table, then bulldozed their remains to use as foundations for a new road!
Well this is exactly what is happening in the Tara/Skryne valley as you read this. This area of Ireland that has been listed as a world heritage site has already lost many important Neolithic burial and astrological sites.
The Irish Government are using archaeology as a policy of destruction, by taking the surface of these sites and leaving them exposed to the elements for a few months so they can justify their removal. A burial site of the Fianna, consisting of at least 30 stone lined graves well over 2000 years has already suffered this fate. Being left exposed in the winter and allowed to crack by the cold so that in the report the National Roads Association must make on all archaeological finds only a pile of stones was recorded.
Many of the archaeologists have walked, when for example they arrived at work in the morning to find ancient sites they were working on had been bulldozed during the night, some are now trying to sue for mal-practise. Only eastern European
students are left who practise archaeology with pick axes quite literally chucking the bones of these mythical characters into a pile.
The remains of a large wooden henge is now under threat from the same policy.
The E.U. have declared these works as illegal
and is in the process of taking the Irish Government to court. Although there is a shorter proposed route for the motorway, under the table deals have been done and the law has been amended to allow a few individuals profit from the destruction of Irish heritage.
The Tara Skryne valley was the most important place in Ireland for over 3000 years and a part of the whole Boyne valley complex with it's astrological alignments probably the most interesting and important place in learning
about our ancestors and soon it will be gone.
