i am looking at starting up a new archaeology group in Trowbridge Wiltshire, the idea is to have a group that welcomes everybody including families and that has talks, site/monument visits etc and in future undertakes field walking, surveying and eventually diggings. i have been lucky enough to do quite a lot of digging but have no formal education and have never started any sort of group before. anyone interested or has any advise please let me know. thanks.

Try metal detecting,
join a club,record your finds,
be part of the bigger picture,
there are one or two dedicated fora,
best wishes,
km.

You will get alot of help from the CBA... and also the Council for Independant Archaeologists. Talk to teh local County Arch... and finally... I am on teh Committee of teh new (but not quite ready yet) IFA special Interest group on Voluntary & Community
Archaeologists Group'

You could also get in touch with me at BAJR and I will be happy to talk with you about it...

It may also be worth contacting Katie Hinds, at the Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum.

She is the Wiltshire Finds Liaison Officer.
Contact details can be found on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website.

Well do keep pestering your County Archaeologist though. In fact it would be better to telephone as well as email as it might make more of an impact if you pester from two or more fronts (so to speak) Smile

Not sure what the setup is at Wilts but some Heritage departments in County Councils have someone other then the County Archaeologist who deals with outreach matters such as yours. Good Luck anyway
