Well I just lost a really long post because I left out a subject heading.
In essence I was remembering some awesome programming from the 90's. I really think it was the last time that original and creative ideas were broadcast.
Classic programmes were shown as re-runs at ideal times - The Man from UNCLE, Randall and Hopkirk deceased, Batman the series, The Saint, Space 1999 (although that was a bit hit and miss) etc.
The other original creations were great though, like CBBC's Mr Whyme, or Aquilla (the battleship two school friends find), Woof, and some serious dramas that dealt with topical issues, eg. Pig Heart boy. Also there was a series I remember on CITV that featured an alien of some kind that could grant a wish. Not three children and It, but a different theme, set in the present day.
These days it seems everything is about the bottom line, and fewer stations create original programmes. Everything seems to be a caluculated risk evaluation, whether money can be made from the brand, or related merchandise etc.
CBBC had great ideas, that were really interesting, eg. The Loch Nessie (a cartoon about these Scottish people), poddington peas, and one about Barney the dog.
It seems that it is all going downhill now, 'dumbing down and sexing up'.
