I worked in a shop (many moons ago) and used to hate having to finish work at lunch time on Wednesday. It meant only having a half day off on the Saturday. There was no choice then, practically every shop was the same.

Not many shops opened on Bank Holiday Monday's either or Good Friday, think that was half day closing as well.

Wow really, in the recent/past 10 years, is as I once worked in a supermarket, you could guarantee that on Christmas Eve and every other bank holiday, you could close up by 4pm. Nowadays they are lucky if they close by 6pm. Don't these shop owners, think that the staff have homes and lives to get back to? It isn't as if there aren't any shops open for a week, you will always be able to get bread, milk, etc. at some shop or garage if you have to, so how sad is the owner, that they obviously dont have a life or home to go to and enjoy themselves!!
oh yes it was always wed afternoon. where i live the local libraries still close on wed aftenoon which is obviously a throw back to when the shops closed too.
