I would like to hear some opinions on who should replace Des Lynam as the presenter for Countdown.

I think Tom O'Connor should host it he is good clean fun and as an ex maths teacher he should give Carol a run for her money.
What do you think?

Tom would be good at Countdown. I remember a programme he presented in the 80s called The Zodiac Game. He was great at that.

I do believe he does do much charity work for children with special needs in the berkshire area. I think he is in the running for the job fingers crossed.

totally agree - i can't think of anyone else I would rather have than Tom as host.

to be honest though i seem to be watching it less and less. i did get used to Des in the end when he started loosening up and he can be quite witty but i just knew he would't stick to it very long. you could see fairly early on it wasn't his bag and it think he finds it quite boring and monotonous.

i read somewhere a rumour about Carol taking over as host. no offence but i think that really would be the start of the end. the appeal of the show is largely due its long established format and presentation style and that's already been shaken to the core by Richard's untimely death. to lose Vord from the board would result in the programme ending within two years, i predict.

I was thinking the very same thing. He does look very bored indead. This week I have wanted to watch the programme because Tom always seems to brighten it up.

oh no i think that would be a disaster. i think the fewer changes to countdown the greater chance it has of surviving. it's crucial that the host remain as being a male not a female.
and even then it's hard enough finding the right host. whoever does it next will have an easier job than Des because they won't be taking over immediately from Mr Coutdown himself. Thanks to Des the viewers have now adapted to someone else in Richard's chair.

I do think Tom is a great choice Smile

who's opted for the wrong O'Connor? Are you refering to Tom or Des or someone else?

I think Des would be disastrous. He would waste so much time wiping tears of laughter from his eyes we'd never get through the rounds.

Countdown was finished when Richard Whitely died and it should always be remembered as his show.

I have to be honest Debz I hardly watch it now - surprisingly nothing to do with Des Lynham and everything to do with Carol. Giving her more 'input' doesn't work for me. I know it's all rehearsed but it's not supposed to be that obvious and it's annoying.

Oh god yes Joe Pasquale would be as watery as Des O'Connor!!! I like Les Dennis but I think he would be wrong.

I think you need someone comfortable, slightly bumbling and a bit quirky and quite witty..basically we need Richard back!!! As there is no chance of that, I can't at the moment think of anyone I would prefer more than Tom O'Connor.
He's got a very warm smooth manner without being slimy and too 'showmanlike' and he doesn't grate on my nerves - that is a major achievement i can tell you!!! Smile

But as i say it's irrelevent as I hardly watch it now. I will be very surprised if Countdown is still going in a few years time.

For a start i think it's a programme that people love because of its familiarity. If they get the right host now it will have to be someone who is willing to stay for the long haul.

I know it's a massive salary but to be frank it would bore me rigid to do that job for any length of time, which is basically i think the truth of what happened with Des.

i agree with that to be honest...but i think that they wanted to keep it going in his memory! he was a very nice man!
and yes, it was his show, wasn't it?
yes, tom o connor does seem to be the best man for the job,..but it does seem to be dragged out a bit now, i think....i never seem to waytch it anymore....Des Lynam is not a patch on Richard! but Tom would do better...
