I think you have to register in most places but this is free. Most poker sites let you play for fake chips but I'm not sure if you have to make an initial deposit or not to start playing.
A word of warning - 'play money' poker games are not particularly good, because (quite naturally) people don't care about losing play money.
My advice, if you are 18 and can afford it, is to play at a site with micro-limits, and learn properly. Sites like the massive Pacific Poker will let you deposit $10 (about £6) and then play for 5c and 10c stakes.
By all means use the play tables to learn the game and how the software works, but you'll not develop much in the way of a permanent winning strategy playing with fake money.

Also, if you do decide to play for pretend money, you will see players with hundreds of thousands of chips. This is not due to their skill but due to their run of luck and if they really were that good at poker, they wouldn't be playing for pretend money.
The best place to play for free (you have to register everywhere you go on the net pratically) is Yahoo games. It is very popular and it will help you get experience of the game before you join the big boys!

hahahaah so so so true - plus theyre more than likely 14 year old americans who sit infront of yahoo all day long stacking chips

i play on a site called PKR it doesnt cost much play chips as well new tournys phase games won 700 dollars in final phase hard work but good fun cost me 84 cents, i am a grandmother and totally hooked
