Yeah, it is really like Dangerous Minds. But not as much as it first seems to be, if that makes any sense!
I love Patrick Dempsey....He should have had a bigger role! For some reason I couldn't stop smiling everytime he was on screen, even though he was being an ass...

Spreading the Carby Love

I spend 23 hours a day wondering whether we’re wrong for each other, wondering whether the baggage we both bring would be enough to sink a small ship...But in the 24th hour, I realise I’ve been thinking about her for 23 hours and it always comes back to, there's something about her that I can’t stay away from. Something about her, that makes me wanna…love her.

*~*~*So what am I? The butterfly or the tornado?*~*~*

ok - i was disspointed with becoming jane. Eek

i think i had hyped it up too much in my head. also i had a bad cold and wasnt feeling great. so maybe i should give it another go.

anne hathaway looked good as jane and her accent was ok most of the time but she did slip up occasionally.
i think the whole falling in love bit was rushed and i couldnt really see her attraction to james mcavoy other than having a bit of rough!!!!

I really liked it - apart from a few aspects; I'll get to them later.

I thought Anne Hathaway was great. The accent was good (a few slips, but nothing really major and I don't think too many people noticed), her acting was solid and she looked fantastic. She is a beautiful woman. Too 'hot' to play Jane Austen? *thinks* Possibly.

James McAvoy was great. I really loved him and totally saw how Jane fell in love with his LeFroy. Charasmatic, experienced, quick witted and gorgeous - everything Jane was looking for. Plus he was totaly different to Westley (the man also pushing for her attention). LeFroy was the liberation and affection she longed for in a man.

Julie Walters (how is it not Dame Julie yet?!?) and James Cromwell was great as Mr and Mrs Austen. But you can't go wrong with those two really can you?

Anna Maxwell Martin was fantastic. Stole every scene she was in. But she could read the shipping forecast and make it fasinating. My favourite actress at the moment.

Lucy Cohu was great: She does sultry very very well although I didn't really believe the romance between her character and Henry.

The film was wonderfully shot. Ireland is a beautiful country anyway and it's beauty was maximised to the limit.

Now to the not so good: Lawrence Fox. I don't get him at the best of times and this film didn't help that. He's just so aloof all the time. Nah, not good.

Personally, I thought it was about 20 minutes too long. It's a shame but I was kind of longing for the credits to roll at the end of one point because that would have been a brilliant ending. Alas, it didn't and it dragged out a bit.

As for the ending itself - unnecessary. I won't spoil it for others but I didn't see what it achieved.

Sorry for the ramble, but the good certainly outweighed the bad and I would see it again.

Sarah what a great review...I must say I agree with most of it... AH was great and again, only jarred on a couple of words with her accent ('offer' was one that kept annoying me).. she is very beautiful though!
James, lovely, AMM...amazing! You're so right she did steal every scene..

But on the whole I was a tad disappointed too...mainly with the fact that it only made me laugh once [quote]Sarah what a great review...I must say I agree with most of it... AH was great and again, only jarred on a couple of words re her accent.. she is very beautiful though!

But on the whole I was a tad disappointed too...mainly with the fact that it only made me laugh once the 'are there no other women in hampshire??' line Big Grin and it should have been more for a film about JA... I also wanted more focus on her books! But that's just me....and being the Sense & Sensibility fanatic that I am, I was disappointed with its lack of mention! But we can't have everything..!!

I totally believed the falling in love thing too.. but overall I just found it a little dull and predictable...Roll Eyes

Now you've gone and done it! Mentioned S&S! I've gotta have a Col. Brandon fix now Big Grin No bad thing, I know Razz

I think the fact that the entire story around the Jane/Tom relationship is so unclear that you can't really 'take it seriously' as her story. Although JM has said in interviews it's not a biopic, which begs the question - what is it supposed to be then? That lack of clarity takes something from the film.

Looking back a day later, I wasn't that impressed with the pacing of the film either.

Hey, I'm trying to make it sound like it's bad, which it isn't. The acting performances are great - but you're right, Clare. Something didn't click. Maybe my own hype caused that.

I have read that the film is not meant to be biographical at all but more of a 'fanfiction'.

alot of elements of the film are true to life though. like her relationship with her sister, i actually have a book of her letters to cassandra. and she did apparently have an affair with an irish lawyer.

the film embelishes on the facts for a story.

Saw factory Girl yesterday and I was actually very impressed! I mean, not the most amazing film of all time or anything...but definitely very watchable and actually very harrowing.
See it just for Guy Pearce...he is AWESOME. And Sienna is even very believable and some of her scenes very moving.
It makes me want to go out and find out more about Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick...which is always good!

i saw premonition
- it could of been a really good film but sadly it just doesnt make it.

the 'climactic' ending actually made me laugh!!!
Razz

i dont think sandra bullock is suited to these glum Frown, suspenseful films. she looks so much better when she is allowed to smile!!! Big Grin

I agree about the movie being disappointing. Premonition that is. But Sandra can do really well in the glum suspenseful films... I loved The Net and Murder by Numbers.

just saw alpha dog at the cinema with justin timberlake in it.

not sure if i liked it or not.
at 1st i didnt cos it was far too 'hip hop' for me with everyone being called dog and waving guns around.
but then i got into the storyline which did actually make me cry.

and also i think that quote from 'Eloisa to Abelard' by Alexander Pope is really beautiful:
How happy is the blameless vessle's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd.

Many thanks for the quote from Pope. I wanted to hear it again and I didn't know exactly where it was from. So you've saved me a search.

It's hilarious when the Kirsten Dunst character says it's a quote from "Pope Alexander".

I like all the films I've seen with Charlie Kaufman scripts. I think "Being John Malkovic" is my favourite, but "Eternal Sunshine..." would come a very close second and I also really rate "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" which I think is a more original and creative film than Clooney's more recognised "Good Night and Good Luck" probably because of the Kaufman script. Only "Adaptation" was a little disappointing to me (Largely because of the end), but even that film contained some kaufman gems. I think whoever the director and actors are, I would see a film written by Kaufman, though I also wish Jim Carey did straighter performances like this more often. He was terrific in "Eternal Sunshine..." whereas I find him really anoying when he's making all those funny faces in his so called comedy roles.

Yes "Eternasl sunshine of the spotless mind" is a difficult film , but one you can watch lots of times and still find things in it and still be moved by it, which is the sign of a really good film, I think.

i completely agree that Jim Carey is better in roles like this rather than silly 'look how funny my face is' roles. & it - along with The Truman Show - is one of the only Jim Carey films i like - and they're both really great.
i agree 'Pope alexander' as she calls him - is such a beautiful quote - the poem its from is really good - but also really long!.

I forgot how great 'Being John Malcovich' is - i really must see it again soon, because i remember being a bit blown away by it the first time!
