you'll probably need to wait for Chas or Charlotte to give you a more accurate answer on that one. But I think it depends on if you want to specialise and what you want to specialise in...
med school is 5 years (or six if you do a BSc too), then loads of years afterwards which are all going through a major change at the mo. i think (Charlotte will knoew though) is three years to get the degree. hope that helps pam

I spend 23 hours a day wondering whether we’re wrong for each other, wondering whether the baggage we both bring would be enough to sink a small ship...But in the 24th hour, I realise I’ve been thinking about her for 23 hours and it always comes back to, there's something about her that I can’t stay away from. Something about her, that makes me wanna…love her.

heather, medicine in america is a postgraduate subject, so you have to get a bachelors degree first (4 years), usually in some science or allied medical subject, before going to medical school to get your md (another 4 years). after graduating from med school, you are a doctor and you enter a specialist training program, the length of which depends on specialty (4 years for emergency medicine). once trained as a specialist, you can take up an attending post. certain attendings then put themselves up for political posts, like chief for example, but attending is as high as you can get in clinical terms. the buck stops with the attending when it comes to clinical decisions about patient care.
carter was in his third year at med school when the show started. his career then continued as follows:
season 1 - third year student season 2 - final year student* season 3 - first year resident (intern) in general surgery season 4 - first year resident (intern) in emergency medicine** season 5 - second year resident in emergency medicine
and so on...
*this year included a stint as subintern (or "subi" as they like to call it) in general surgery **a switch from one specialty to another, hence having to repeat the first year of specialist training
does this help? dont forget that in britain, the system is completely different of course.
What do nurses have to do? The same training or something else?
Training in the US for nurses is different to the uk and there are lots of different types of courses, but I'll have a go at explaining.
To be an RN ( registered nurse), you would take a 4 year baccalaureate degreee. There are also associated degrees lasting 2/3 years which leads to graduating as a licensed practical nurse. I think that's the equivalent of a health care assistant or enrolled nurse in Britain. Training in the states is more focused on academic learning than practical, whether thats a good thing or not I don't know.
Most of the nurses working in the ER would be RNs in order to carry out the care that the medics order eg, drugs, ivs...
