lots of people seem to like ray...maybe its just me in my own corner who doesnt find him the least bit attractive. I think him and neela should get together though, that would be ok. Ray has nothing on the beauty contest agasint Carter and Luka. Period.

Well I judge people by more than looks. Regardless of his looks, which I find mildly attractive, I still don't think he is a good character. The writers can never decide where they're going with him. In season 11 the writers made a big mess of Neela's character IMO by never letting her progress; they just held her back for the whole season. Now they're making that mistake with Ray. So many times we have seen an apparent end to the 'rock doc' attitude and an actual commitment to medicine. So many times has Ray been dragged back and denied the chance of evolution.
We know nothing about his background. In fact, all we really know about him is he plays in a band. There doesn't seem to be much substance to his character at all.

I think the problem is that the writers have writtenhi sloppily on the assumption that he's "hot" enough for people to either not notice or not care. The rather cliched Bad Boy Rock Dock with the nail polish and BBQ on the roof and string of floozies has a very limiited lifespan after which some more depth is required and I don't feel as though they've got round to it yet. Unfortunately if they don't do it fairly soon a number of viewers will, I suspect, have lost interest and the window of opportunity for hooking a viewer on a character will be gone.

The complete lack of background doesn't help. Hands up who thinks we'll find out that he's:

- Adopted
- The son of a Minister
- orphaned at the age of 7 and raised by nuns.
- A woman


That said it's clear that he has his adherants and for their sake if for no other reason I hope he acquires some plausible and interesting backstory sooner rather than later.

when i think ray i just think...what's the point? he has no deapth, no interesting stories and his basic character outline has been seen SO many times before on the show and been played so muhc better by malucci and pratt!
and i was looking at him in this week's episode thinking, ok put all that aside, is he hot? and no he isn't. he's average looking and has an annoying voice... sorry ray lovers but you're lookin' for someone's who's hot AND has depth...luka's your man!

Yeah, I agree with Clare, I love Shane West as an actor but his character in ER is rather useless. If you have someone like him, you should at least give him something to do. I like the Zoe storyline though...Meh...
