They said it was so that they could have more time for telling the stories, but, apparently the running time has been decreased by about a minute or two, so I reckon it's so they can get more adverts in. It sucks!
To be honest, I've been FF-ing through the opening credits on my videos/DVDs for quite a while now.
I check out who's placed where and what clips have been used now and then, but generally I hit the FF button to get to the actual episode quicker. Maybe because I've heard it 5 thousand times during all my watchings and rewatchings of the early series. :\

But they still have a tiny bit of a kind of tune , or a drumbeat thing which isn't really a tune at all, and then they run the names of the actors under the action, thus distracting people from the action anyway. If they really wanted to be different why not have nothing, go straight into the action and put the cast names at the end for those who still don't know them. That at least would have some point to it. Otherwise why change the music and title sequence that everyone knows and loves just to have time for more adverts. It may not be very important, but it's a pointless thing to do in terms of improving (or not) the actual show.
