I'd say that the same fascination with medical-related things that drew me to ER drew me also towards taking Medicine.

I don't think ER inspired me to do it though. I hope not!

Hee. Jade, I can imagine you sitting in a classroom full of med students, all of whom are being asked why on earth they want to dally with bodily fluids on a daily basis, and most of them will say that they have an inner drive and insatiable desire to help people, and then you'd pipe up that you're doin' it 'cause you think ER's cool and all the doctors and nurses are oh so pretty.

I have a weirdly vivid imagination.

I wanna be a doctor, may possibly do a post grad degree in medicine after my degree's finished. Whilst ER is realistic to an extent, its not exactly life like, and working in UK is different to the states. But I don't want to put you off. You wanna be a doc, you go for it.

I know how you feel about having no one to talk about it with. the only friend of mine who watches it lives 60 miles away so its difficult for us to talk about it. But like u said can talk about it on here.

i think it would be interesting but i am no way near clever enough to be a doctor. i tihnk i'd rather be a nurse anyway but i am still not going to follow a career in medicine. i am not interested in science enough to go for that. but it would be fun. my mum was a nurse and is now a social worker. that is an interesting job but i still don't know what i want to be...

Well my degree's in history (am a first year - well just finished my first year) and I don't mind u asking at all. I know Swansea (uni i am at) offers the post grad degree in medicine which is really competitive (maybe 300 applications for like 75 places), but your degree can be in any subject, science or non science. Now that's just at Swansea and I'm not sure of other post grad degrees in other areas. But i think they think it kinda works out, as the scientists help the non scientists out with the scinece side of things but the non scinetists help the scientists out with the social science side, if that makes sense. Now whether or not I get into medical school anywhere, is another matter, and they do say that if you get lower than a 2:1 then they most likely won't consider you, and also they may prefer you to do a higher degree eg. a masters. Also you have to show why you want to do medicine with such an unrelated subject eg. for me its history, and i will have to come up with a good answer if i get that far. But I will give it a go all the same. I've not researched other places recently but I will do soon anyway for my own benefit. Does that help? If you want to know more just ask, though I'm no expert. (Btw if you google Swansea Uni and then go to post grad courses then u should find the website for the graduate entry with entry requirements on which may give you some ideas as to what to aim for). But do shop around.

Yeah that helps...I have only just finished as levels and am only 17 my first intnsion was to do premed but thats more competative than grad level and with only a bb in my double science at gcse its unlikely i will get a place unless my ukcat score is amazing. so i was thinkin bout a nursing degree then a graduate degree into medicine. I was just wandering thou if i do that on my form to enter into a degree to become a doctor will they look at my alevel and gcse results?

Ok well I think Nursing is sensible. For me if i want to do medicine I will need so relevant hospital experience but u will have some, and the clinical skills will be easier for you. With regards grades I think if you're competant and can do the amount of work expected then they won't be that bothered about them. I might be wrong, but that's the way I see it. I didn't get best A level grades (A,B,C and D), and certainly at Swansea, I don't think they will let you study (or rather u won't have much chance of getitng on the course) with less than a 2:1 and many have higher degrees. I seem to remember Leicester and Warwick Medical school offered something - i think at leicester it was graduate medicine for biological scientists and stuff like that and at Warwick nursing and subjects allied to medicine, but do shop around as i can't remember all that and i might be wrong about that. But basically I would say don't worry too much about grades, go to uni and do what u enjoy.
