I suspect Casualty holds that title. Although if you exclude all the series of Casualty that have been made since it passed it sell-by date, maybe ER would win. (someone's going to cyber-slap me for that one, I know it, lol)
I would like to see ER last a long time yet, but only if the quality doesn't hit the floor in the process. The problem with very long-running shows is that often they eventually run out of things to do - so then either it gets repetitive, redoing old stories, or things get so unrealistic in the attempt to do something new that it becomes silly.

.................................................................................... Carter: did the gang go out again last night? Abby: its not a gang it’s a club Carter: not another stage diving incident I hope Abby: first rule of girls club is you don’t talk about girls club Carter: you’re not going to tell me what you did? Abby: The usual, prank calls, pillow fights, lesbian experimentation
It is still entertaining, but imo it has lost some of its spark. There are a few really brilliant episodes every season still... not as many as there used to be.

I presume yoiu're referring to ER and not Casualty, which passed it's sell by date about ten years ago, but, apparently, lots of people still watch it. Can't think why.
ER is nowhere near as good as it used to be, I suspect, mostly because it has been on too long. Of course it's still miles better than Casualty, but that isn't saying much.
Most artists say that it's best to quit when you're ahead and that you should leave people wanting more. Most great , iconic programmes haven't run for more than 6 seaaons and some for a good deal less. I suppose it's a sign of how good ER was that it can still grip on occasion, even after so long. However, much as I can't tear myself away, I'm afraid I think they've already got to the point there they've run out of new things to say or do and new things and people to do them with. I'd hate to see a 14th Season which was really, really bad. I want to remember ER as the greatest TV show ever, which I truly believe it was.

I think thats a little harsh... Glad to see though that like me you still cant tear yourself away. There is still entertainment in it.
I agree they've run out of new things to do... I do often feel 'this has been done' when I see a new episode. But sometimes they'll put a slightly different spin on it.
Oooh and sometimes they'll pull something out of the bag. Like that episode last season with Cynthia Nixon. That was fabulous!
Actually, I think the one with Ray Liotta was even better, but that was just two epis in a whole season, and they were good , because of the exeptional performances of the guest stars.
Time was, the regular cast could do stunning things. Now they are pretty ordinary. They do what is required of them by lame scripts well enough, which is still better than a lot of really bad stuff that's on TV. It's just that we were used to such a very, very high standard of acting, filming and , above all script, and there's no way any show could be that excellent , or even consistently good, after being on for so long, however good it was to start with. It's a shame, but a fact of life.
I agree, S12 has been about 100% better; even though Canon City was a drag the the performances of Linda Cardellini and Goran Visnjic were excellent; it just really wasn't season opener material.
I think the cast still pulls off extraordinary things; if you were to look at the script for Luka and Abby's encounter in the ambulance bay at the end of "Two Ships" I don't think that "thin" would begin to describe it; the rest was down to the acting.
More importantly it's much more balanced than at any time since about S8 I think, and that makes a world of difference.
yea the acting has always been top-nocth (sp?) from all the characters i think.. the one that arnt very gd didnt last very long

I think its interesting, I got into ER in Series 8, then watched previous series (though have yet to see end of Series 3 or most of series 4), and I love it. There are some episodes which I particularly like, and some I find a little boring. I think for me anyway, its the humour and energy of the show. Ok so they deal with all the trauma's and blood and stuff, but then the next scene could be a really funny one. Like Orion in the Sky, that is one of my all time favs, ok and it was sad, but then Doc Greene, when he's talking to that lady at the end says, I have a brain tumour, I win, and that was really funny for me, and was a bit of light relief from the other stuff that was happening.
I also love the staff's personal lives, and in some cases how we've seen them grow (Carter beign the obvious example now, I know he's left and all but still). But even Kerry, from possibly slightly twisted and nasty to someone I can at least now warm too...a little - well a lot more than I used to, possibly because of all the bad stuff that's happend to her.
Added to this theres the way it keeps surprising me - like House. I think they're going to run out of ideas but they don't and it develops into a really good show, and if I hear an idea they're going to do they end up surprising me in the way they've done it.
"Never let your work become your life, Kerry. Live a little."
