Luka doesn't have the right to send Pratt but what Pratt told him gives him the power. I think Luka's reaction to Carter's request was reflex really and it might not actually have ocurred to him that Abby would much care if he was there or not. She said it herself - they aren't living together or married and the relationship remains undefined largely - she admits - because of her. Perhaps He just didn't, until now, see himself as that important to her. Although she'd miss the sex. Obviously. And Pratt would be no substitute in that case!

Lol about that last part. I just don't think coercing someone into going to a dangerous different country seems very much in-character for Luka. And, much as the relationship between he and Abby isn't defined, what we don't see is that they spend practically every night together and so I'd have guessed sensitive, family-orientated Luka would have realised how close they have become, and how she would react to a request for 'time-off' such as his.

He's also used to her being closed off; remember "I don't want to be helped!" from TLYS? I'll bet he does. In the end though yes, this was a means of getting Pratt to Africa and to get him there still in The Great Dr Pratt mode which he displayed in this episode and which showed he had certainly not used the time Luka had him off work to reflect on the nature of his role as a doctor (as we saw with his sexual shenanigans) but to convince himself he was in the clear, the better to put to use his full repertoire of "WTF??!!!" expressions when he gets to Darfur.

Oh well, the Africa story-line had better be worth all this out-of-characterness of this episode. I wish they could just leave out Darfur (this season at least) and then they would have got to skip all the horrible Luka writing. He might be used to being pushed away, but I don't think he himself would want to instigate an even bigger gap, especially when his last family were killed when he was away from home.

Well, not away from home in the same sense; he was across the road!

Yep, I know. There just must be similar feelings in the leaving the vulnerable wife/child situation.

I though tthe ending when Ray says Neela was his only ever best mate was really sad. I hope it ends happily between them.

I think Luka sending Pratt to Dafur was just a clumsy plot device to get him there for the next two episodes, since there is no logical reason for him to go in terms of his past history on the show, but TPTB obviously thought it would make an interesting hook to have an African American be the innocent abroad this time. I think it's an interesting idea.
I wish Abby (or MT playing her) wouldn't do the little girl helpless baby talk she's been doing lately, sort of almost lisping and hesitating as if she were a shy teenager. She did it when trying to explain that she didn't want to be on her own (when Luka had already decided not to go, but couldn't get a word in). I find it unattractive for a mature, independent previously, feisty female, to ape the manners of a young girl. It made me feel quite queezy
Oh I feel for Neela. The sense of forboding was so beautifully acted. What a dilemma. Poor Neela. I thought the woman who played Gallant's mother was very good.

This was a great eppy! Awww, Reela - twas a very cute scene! As was the Luby scene especially the "I'm sending Pratt", "To help with the pregnancy?", "No to Darfur" - I didn't really expect Luka to go but i was still glad that he didn't and it was good to hear Abby express what she was feeling. Although Luka sending Pratt did seem a little contrived. Also hoping Morris doesn't leave. I also enjoyed the deaf boy storyline - it showed the inadequacies of the police.

this was a good ep! the luby...awwwww is anyone else pelased to see that they are finally communicating? the writer seemed to have raelly remembered that what broke them up last time was that they never communicated and i think this was a good example of them both opening up and actually listening to each other. and aw that kiss was so cute! neela/ray still doN't really care about this... i doN't know it's just hasn't grabbed me and ray still annoys the hell out of me. i'm glad pratt is going it will be interesting to see how he develops. and yeah i liked abby's line about sending pratt to help with the pregnancy very funny too! I loved this episode!
Abby and Luka were so sweet in this episode! Abby's babbling was so cute and funny. And when Luka just sat there knowing that he was gonna stay with her. And the kiss at the end was so sweet
Luka: I'm sending Pratt Abby: (confused) To help me with the baby? Luka: (smiling) To Darfur.
So good!! Love Luby!!
