It is a social subject like history and georgaphy. In Scotland at GCSE level most schools get a choice of picking History, Georgraph or Modern Studies (some pupils pick more than one). But we are all under the one faculty if you like.

It is a secondary subject, with exams and everything. There is quite an even split between pupils taking those three, with geography slightly ahead as it is seen as the easier option.... less writing. Roll Eyes

so, just so i have understood this correctly. the kids don't actually have to take exmas in all those subjects? they just choose one out of geography, history etc? that's lucky. it's a cool system! is it like that with every subject, that they only choose the ones they want to do for GCSE's and A levels?

Yup.

In Scotland when they get to about 15 they have to choose 8 subjects out of the many, many they've sampled in their junior years at secondary school. Subjects they want to continue to exam level.

It can be seen as too young an age to be so restrictive on their futures though.

They have to take English, Maths, a language, a science, a social subject, an artistic subject and then various others to make it up to 8.

Although these days its become more flexible and I've seen people dropping a language to be able to take 3 sciences for example (we had this talk elsewhere Wink).

Its good as a teacher to have a subject that people opt into. It means you get kids who want to be there... well most of the time.

How does it work in Austria?

well we ahve to take very subject up to A levels but only actually do A levels (it's not actually A levels just the austrian equivalent) in about 7 subjects. for example i have about 15 or more subjects (depnding on the time of year) and i have to do A levels in maths, german and english plus four other subjects i can choose. your system is better! if i have to pass all my subjects to graduate which sucks. plus we don't have any course work. whether or not i pass in maths comes down to 1 day and 1 exam where i have to know everything we did in the last four years. trust me it sucks! Frown

But that does mean you have more choices open to you...

If someone decided when they were 15 here that they wanted to be a writer and they took lots of writing type and artistic subjects, they would be scr*wed if they changed their mind at 18 and wanted to be a doctor... cos they wouldn't have enough sciences.

Plus I assume then that you only have one year with exams?

We have 3 years of exams.
