SNAP! Me too. I'm abso-bloody-lutely *terrified* of spiders bigger than 1cm. I've filled every gap I can find in the house, and when I open windows I cover the frame tightly in net curtain to keep them out.
However, I left a window open for a few nights during a hot spell and a little spider (Spiddy) made its web on the inside of the window. Consequently, when I shut it it got trapped in the space between the window and the net. Now I feel responsible for it, so I've been feeding it with small insects and water.
Insects are difficult to find now, and I just haven't the heart to shooo it away, but I don't know what to feed it?

Don't think of it as shooing it away, think of it as setting it free. It knows how to find itself food. ( Cue mushy "if you love them, set them free" quote. )
I had a lethargic bee on my window sill once - I ended up putting a little sugared water down near it - it was quite fascinating seeing it lick it up. Ultimately I encouraged it into a cardboard tube and put it outside.
As a side note, I've noticed that Jem's DIY section on the Wild Thing microsite seems to have some content now. I'm not convinced about the garden hibernaculum... but then I've got clay soil, so I doubt a layer of gravel would provide enough drainage. I could build a pond quite easily though
