The essence of action is paranoia. Ever noticed that the same environmentalists that are telling everyone how Armageddon is imminent due to Global Warming are also just as negative about any serious alternatives. These irrational individuals are paranoid about a mass extinction event of humanity. You can't blame them for their intention to prevent the extinction of the human race. Yet they are just as paranoid of Nuclear Power stations that 'could' lead to nuclear weapons in the wrong hands. I mean, what are we supposed to do, not let anyone drive a car because they 'could' kill someone. This is just paranoia, and if left to its own means, will lead to a hysterical mass of irrational fascists, who want to ban everything under the sun because it 'could' be harmful. We need to implement technologies that prevent the dangers that 'could' be our downfall. But if the ignorance of the masses are not informed of the rational science, then humanity 'could' prevent itself from getting itself out of the hole it got itself into.

Or alternatively you can consider the view of scientists:

Joint science academies’ statement: Global response to climate change

7 Jun 2005
Ref: 08/05

The national science academies of the G8 nations and Brazil, China and India, three of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the developing world, have signed a statement on the global response to climate change.

The statement stresses that the scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action and calls on world leaders, including those meeting at the G8 summit at Gleneagles in July 2005, to do the following.

* Acknowledge that the threat of climate change is clear and increasing
* Launch an international study to explore scientifically-informed targets for atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and their associated emissions scenarios, that will enable nations to avoid impacts deemed unacceptable.
* Identify cost-effective steps that can be taken now to contribute to substantial and long-term reduction in net global greenhouse gas emissions. Recognise that delayed action will increase the risk of adverse environmental effects and will likely incur a greater cost.
* Work with developing nations to build a scientific and technological capacity best suited to their circumstances, enabling them to develop innovative solutions to mitigate and adapt to the adverse effects of climate change, while explicitly recognising their legitimate development rights.
* Show leadership in developing and deploying clean energy technologies and approaches to energy efficiency, and share this knowledge with all other nations.
* Mobilise the science and technology community to enhance research and development efforts, which can better inform climate change decisions.

Warming is good for humans and cooling is bad. This whole debate is pathetic. Our children will laugh at us for being so primative.

Ah, yes, the official handbook of responses.

Hi JL,

Guess what? - yesterday I stumbled across the nearest thing to an official handbook.

Boy oh boy - look at that graph on CO2.

Yes, I had come across this government-sponsored line before!

Interesting that it plots CO2 rather than temperature.

What also intrigues me - and I have no doubt that there is a good reason - is how they can be quite so exact for each individual year a few KYr ago. Do you happen to know this?

There's an explanataion about how Ice Core isotopes are analysed and dated here:
http://www.gisp2.sr.unh.edu/GISP2/MoreInfo/Ice_Cores_Past.html

There's also a good 'popular' science book on the subject called 'The Two Mile Time Machine' that also goes into Isotope analysis and core dating in some depth. It's by one of the Americans involved in one of the Greenland ice core projects.

Howdo JL and all my months of surfing has payed off so this is the first time someones's asked me a Q on GW that "I immediately knew someone who knows". It looks like they can get an accuracy of "sub-annual" precision - months (months!!).

Reminds me of that 800 year gap between temperature and CO2. Next they'll be saying the 792 years and 3 months gap!

RealClimate again...

" However, tucked away at the end was a rather confused section, where it appears that Lindzen bet Nye that ice cores don't have a resolution better than 2000 years. Now this is an odd claim, and an odder thing to bet on, since Greenland cores (GRIP, GISP2) and Antarctic cores (EPICA DML) have sub-annual resolution in many cases for the isotope (temperature) records, and at least decadal resolution (Law Dome, Siple Dome) for the greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4). It's true that the very longest records (Vostok and Dome-C) have coarser resolution, but surely Lindzen doesn't think they are the only ones that exist?"

Mmmm to be precise you did ask a few Kyr ago. More surfing is required.

I'll look for reports on the direct gas chromatography measurements (C14/C18 isotope?? guessing) rather than that tree-ring hockey stick "controversy" stuff. Too much stats for my liking.

Maybe there's a tame unmelted glacier with just the right resolutin.

RealClimate again saying more eloquently than me...

"Comparatively, the amount of information we have for any period in the past is less - hundreds (in some cases a few thousand) of records of climate 'proxy' data (i.e. records that are related to climate, such as tree rings ot isotope ratios, but that aren't direct thermometers or rain gauges) that are not necessarily optimally spaced, nor necessarily well-dated, nor uncontaminated by non-climate influences."

That's the bit I do like - one of the parts of AGW which makes me a bit sceptical is the statistical side. I see quite a few claims which I don't think the data justifies.

As a mathematician friend of a friend said to me "Stats is the lowest branch of maths". Yep - Snobbism in academia!

BTW I hear a lot of talk of "prove GW" etc. I think it's only in mathematics you can have a definitve proof. I don't even know whether Newton's laws are bullet proof. Or gravity's proven.
Now where's me velcro boots?

Ever notice how a lot of these AGW scientists appear to take an almost sadistic pleasure is terrorising people and making them feel insecure with their dire hypebole-laden predictions of doom?

I was watching a BBC documentary with David Attenborough and they had this one American guy on who was spouting the most retarded and OTT garbage about "if you want to live in a world with only rats, cats and dogs, the man-made global warming is for you..."

Say wha...?

Firstly, how does an increase in global temps = a complete elimination of bio-diversity except for "rats, cats and dogs"?

Where is his proof of only "rats, cats and dogs" being the only mammals left?

And yet, the BBC and the producers of the show allow this clown to sit there and make this crazy prediction in the most condesending and houlier-than-thou manner without him presenting any proof for this "rats, cats and dogs" only prediction.

The predictions of mass extinction of global bio-diversity never happened during climate changes in the past. If what this idiot was saying had any validity we would be living in a a world today of only "rat's cats and dog" - but amazingly there are not. My backyard is currently filled with thousands of species which survived the last global and warming periods - not just the "rats, cats and dogs"...

The only reason this scientist feels a obligation to make this "rats, cats and dogs" prediction is because he somehow enjoys frightening people in the hope that they will run to him and his like minded massiah-complexes in the ICCP for salvation.

So they talk about AGW in the most sensational and OTT terms and do not offer one iota of proof to support their mindless "rats, cats and dogs" prediction and even worse the BBC just puts it out there without questioning it. Bizzare!

The big explosion of multicellular animal life in the precambrian resulted in the evolution of about 100 different phyla (a phylum is the top-level classification of life-form type). Since then the various major extinctions have wittled these down to about 30. Sure, the remaining species evolve into the empty ecological niches, but it is a reduction in biodiversity.

Though I didn't see the programme it sounds to me like he might be making the point that typically it is the large animals that bear the brunt of mass extinctions.

I wonder if its possible that the outcome will leave only those that live close to and in harmony with the environment? That would be cool in my book even tho I'm a gonna!

I was thinking more of the "native indians" or "aboriginal" or "bushmen" types of the world!!
